Played my singles matchplay this afternoon against a 10 handicapper from Southport Old Links. Fantastic sunny day with barely a breath of wind. For the first 6 holes, the lead changed a couple of times before a series of parred halves saw us all square with 4 to play.
My opponent then deservedly took the lead on the 15th with a par on the SI1 hole. What followed on the next 3 holes though will probably give him nightmares for the next 12 months. The 16th is a short par 3. I knocked it pin high but 15 yards to the left of the green. I then chipped in for a 2 and to draw level. We then teed off on the par4 17th. He hit his straight down the middle after I had put mine in the right rough. All I could do was hit a knock down 5 iron into the bunker 50 yards from the front right of the green. My oppo stuck his 2nd onto the front of the green. He must have thought that he had it all sewn up at this point. I then hit the best bunker shot I have EVER played. It flew sweetly onto the right side of the green, checked and then rolled slowly into the cup. It was a proper sucker punch that he couldn't recover from. A 5 iron to 15 feet on the 18th ended the match with a 2 hole win.
Credit goes to my opponent Mark who was a thoroughly good bloke and is someone I have arranged to play with again. Fortunately, in the next round I get to play his best friend again at Southport Old Links. I doubt I'll get the same luck, but who knows....
