My good self along with my most reliable partner bagged our second Club’s pair’s competition yesterday with an emphatic win in the clubs foursome competition. This follows our Club’s Greensome’s win back in March.

My partner’s h/c is 12 and mine is 25, (37) and the comp was half of combined h/c with a maximum of 18 shots, so technically I was playing of 24, and it was stroke play. It was my first foursome’s match ever and I must admit it was a strange feeling only playing half the shots, especially on the tees.

We decided that my partner would drive off the odds and me the evens, so he puts his first drive 6 inches behind a tree, I have no option but to chip out sideways. He then hits his pitch into the green to within 2 foot of the hole and we start with a net birdie.

Our net scores for the first 9 holes are
-1, par, -1, par, par, -1, -2, par, par. = -5

Yes we bag a birdie 2 on the 7th when my partner hits his tee shot to within 10 feet of the pin and I sink the putt. Only to find out later that we have won 23 balls in the 2 ball sweep. Happy days.

Coming home was more difficult with my putting letting me down, with 2 putts missed on 10 and 12 from inside 4 foot, our net scores,

+1, par, +1, par, -1, -1, –1, par, par. = -1

So a total of 65 (par 71)

To be truful we both played our part, my partner only hit two bad shots all day, the drive on the first, and a putt on the 10th when he left it 4foot short from no more than 18 feet. I personally was delighted with my contribution, I drove well, I only fluffed (hit it fat) one fairway shot, and pitched well, my putting was below average, but my partner nailed everything I left him.

Our stats were FIR 7/13 GIR 7/18 although we chose to lay up on three holes, loads of water on two of them and the other one was the glory shot, difficult to take on in this format, especially as we knew we were playing well. We also took 36 putts.

It was a great day, but with a winning margin of 4 shots I think a few of the members are getting concerned about my h/c. Yes I played well yesterday, and I know I can play at a lower h/c, but I have just got to get more consistent, 13 and 14 holes just isn’t good enough in comps to get my h/c down.

More practice.

So what did I do after the presentation, got changed back into my waterproofs and went back out there (on my own) and racked up 19 points on the front 9, and then parred the 18th on my walk back to the clubhouse, and then spent another 15 minutes on the putting green.

Just to say I don’t protect my h/c, my conscience wouldn’t let me and I play in most competitions although I do tend to stay clear of the monthly medals after I racked up a 130 last October. Perhaps it is the time to go back and get my feet wet.

Nice win but you've out Homer'd Homer. Even I have never won an event and then gone straight back out to practice!!!!! Not sure if that was foolish or even worth doing given the conditions but seeing as you hit it so well I guess if nothing else it confirmed that you're striking it great. Well done
