Annual handicap review?

Anybody know how these work and how well you have to do to have a chance of a cut? Ive had a steadily consistent year without many spectacular scores but have been close to my handicap more often than not.

Not sure, I had a hat full of really good rounds last year spoilt by one or two bad holes, won a couple of minor comps and got cut 2 shots in the review after discussions with the Pro, sadly given one shot back this year thro generally poor play, 2012 not a good season.

My very crude understanding is that the handicap golfer is, on average, expected to score around 25% of their handicap + 1.5 OVER handicap.

e.g. 8 handicapper would tend to score around 11.5 over CSS

So if she was averaging less than that the computer might flag her up for a cut.....

At least, I hoping that's how it works 'cos I'll be in the frame for a wee cut myself!

At our place its all done by computer, generally if you win a board competition you get cut a stroke :/ Really confusing though lol

That is absolutely not what the annual review is about, and should not be a bsais for cutting player's handicaps.

With the introduction of ESRs will annual reviews still happen? I had an extra shot taken off after a couple of good rounds at the start of the season and have had a few smaller cuts (and a fair few 0.1s) since. I did wonder if the ESR has been introduced to keep things in order as an when they happen, rather than at the end of the season. Be interested to know the answer if anyone knows?

I say that as last year i got two strokes and won two board comps, having spoke to a few people they seem to agree this is the case. May be the computer that works it out another way its just a few people say this so i tend to agree.

Ive read something online roughly along the same lines as that. I was wondering how NR's count when working that out or if they even count at all? Going off the scores i have returned my average is 4 nett shots over the CSS.

Here goes.
CONGU allows the handicap software companies to produce a computer-generated report which analyses all players’ performance since the last Annual Review. This will identify players who potentially require consideration for handicap adjustment – down or up – with a recommendation for each player who falls into this category. These are only recommendations which the handicap committee can accept, reject or modify. My understanding is that the reports which CONGU have authorised to be produced are based on the EGA handicapping system’s Annual Handicap Review.
According to a player’s handicap level, there is an Expected Mean Stableford Score (EMSS) which under the EGA system goes from 34 points for the very low handicapper to 28 for the very high handicapper.
From scores returned for each player the Average of the Better Half of his Stableford Scores (ABHSS) is calculated. This is then compared to his EMSS and this comparison leads to:
No action needed or
Handicap reduction recommended or
Handicap increase recommended.

The handicap committee will also take into account any other factors such as performance in non-qualifiers such as matchplay knockouts, four ball better balls etc.. As stated in one of the previous posts, however, handicap committees are expressly forbidden to say things like "2 board comp wins = 2 shot reduction".

Here is a quote from the report generated for our last Annual Review:

No Returns can distort a players average performance and the number of NR’s recorded by players who have been identified as possibly requiring adjustment now forms part of the report. The Committee should view this statistic against performance to assess if the NR’s have unduly affected the average performance.

Thanks for the replies Rosecott! Reading through the bits and pieces it sounds as if theres a chance i might sneak another shot off in the annual review with a bit of luck. I think it depends how they view my NR's because i had a few early in the season when i struggled. The second half of the season has been very consistent though and if they view my scores without the NR's i would be suprised if i dont get a cut of some sort.

Ive played steady but not fantastic golf so far this season and stayed generally in the buffer zone, But Ive also won the clubs Rabbits Matchplay Knockout Compitition playing really good golf in some cases well under my handicap, could this call for a handicap review.
I would like it to as I feel my golf would benifit from me being cut a couple of shots to make me work harder on my game.

Hopefully I should be getting a cut next month. Except 1 NR Ive not had under 30 points this season with a couple of scores of 45,43 and 42 thrown in. Been told Im looking at a two shot cut so will be slightly miffed I dont get it.

Stu I had a similar set of results last year and was cut 2 on Annual review - I think it will happen. I wish I could play somewhere near to it this year though.
