Angry Birds rule question

So last friendly knock up I was driving off on the 15th and my partner winced a little when I pulled the drive left.

Thinking I was in the lake which is a fair old 'pull' I was about to re-load when he said - no it's worse than that!

Turns out it landed about 3 yards away from the breeding pair of black swans plus their youngsters all sat sunning and cleaning themselves on the bank.

As I approached the two adults got a 'bit lively' and showed an interest in killing anything that came close so being a coward I abandoned the ball and took a drop. Took a bit of stick as you can imagine but when I said to my mate he could keep the ball if he retrieved it he decided it wasn't a great plan either.

There was no way I was standing a few feet away with my back to them swinging a big bit of metal around their young and getting out alive.

Question is what should I have done and what would be the rule in a comp? - is it a free drop under 'fear of death by swan pecking' or penalty for cowardice?

I think this was answered in the magazine a few months back. I believe that there is a free drop from the nearest safe point (the rule is used in more exotic climates when balls land near snakes, aligators etc)

A bit like when people say that something will have your eye out.

How come A&E wards aren't riddled with people who have an eye out or a swan related fracture then?

Maybe it's because people have been warned about these avarian beasts so keep away, thus, no injuries!

I seriously doubt it though, what's the first thing people do when you tell them the plate's hot or there's wet paint...???

I would be more worried about stepping in swan [****]. That stuff doesn't come off.

what a wuss, if we abandoned balls every time we came across swans or geese at wybo, we'd need a box a round.

believe it or not the swans will move

however, murph, as usual has the right of it, sometimes need a shovel just to tee up
