Hi guys,

After having multiple driving range lessons, talking about swing, posture, grip etc etc i've got my first "on course" lesson this weekend.

What can i expect from it? What will we go over? will it be more about course management and less about swing etc?

Cheers

I've had a couple of these and in a way its down to you and your teacher to agree. for example, I've worked on driving, which is intimidating when going against a Professional, short game being different shots to the green with different clubs or course management such as distance and club selection V your ego!

But chat with the teacher and agree together what to learn from.

I've had a couple as well.

Firstly does everyone expect the pro to play as well ?

My view on that would be probably not as he should be there to focus on what you.

As this is your first one he will probably look and see how you swing / hit shots compared to on the range and also how your course management is. He will probably ask you how you will play the hole you are on. Just really trying to build up a picture of how you respond on the course and coach you accordingly.

I think they are are very good tool for the pro to use, if used properly.

Edited to ask, who you having lessons with ?

I had an excellent on course lesson a good while back. Pro walked round with two of us and covered an awful lot in the course of 18 holes. The Pro didn't play, he just kept an eye on each of us, asked us what we were thinking, why we did things and gave us suggestions in place of our wrong choices. Excellent afternoons instruction.

I've had a few playing lessons.
They sometimes play with you, sometimes just walk/drive round with you.
They tend to look at your approach to the game - shot choice, things you do differently on the course to on the range, aim, expectation v's reality, green reading tips etc

For example, if you hit a LW for a chip, the chances are they'll suggest you should have hit a 7 iron

The best experience I've had has been playing in pro-ams with my club pro, Ian. He is obviously more interested in his own income. But as they get something from the 4 ball element they want the team to do well so give tips and advice. Plus, Ian gives me feedback when he next sees me in the shop or at lessons.

A good pro is worth their weight in gold and Ian Walley is a very good one.

Thanks, im not sure if i expected him to play or not, i'm thinking more that he'll walk with me as i play, advise on shots, what to do etc

Its only 3 holes we play so its not too bad. Its the final part of a package of lessons I bought at my local council run course. The coach is PGA pro John Kelly

Had a couple playing lessons and the pro has always played along side. Usually around the greens they have picked up or focused more on discussing my thoughts and giving advice. If there were more on the lesson instead of just me, I probably wouldn't expect them to play and just observe and advise.

As for what to expect, it all depends what comes up, if there is a particular shot that comes up that you have issues with ask how to play it. Especially with green side shots I always found that they can always give you another way to play a shot that is a higher % shot than the one you are about to play.

But overall I would just ask lots of questions on anything you want, course management, shots, mental strategies etc.

I've had a few over the years. Very enjoyable and a different learning method. More about course management, how you see shots and different ways of playing shots especially around the green. I tend not to worry what the pro scores or is doing. To be selfish it's my lesson and about me
