amsterdam

im off to amsterdam with the mrs in july for 3 nights. can any of you good folk recommend any hotels

None that the missus would approve of
:o :o :o :o :o

Hope you have a great time. Been a few times myself and it's a fantastic city to spend the week-end.
Great Argentinian Steak restaurant there as well. Big old T bone with all the trimmings and a few pints of lager give you plenty of strength.... ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

Blimey - is that the Argentinian just off Dam Suare - if so, i went there in 1989, and took teh missus there in (about) 1999

I do remember bloody good steak

Had a weekend in Amsterdam a few years ago cant remember the name of the hotel but asked a taxi driver to take us to a good restaurant and he took us right in the middle of the red light district

And sleeping and eating is cheating especially in the Dam! ;)

Depending on what you get up to, both can be difficult to avoid. Steakhouses can be very good.

Hotels:
IBIS next to the station is modern and clean but (and it's a big but) breakfast finishes at 11:30am, which is far to early and we missed it both days. Apart from that it should do the trick.

Hotel Terminus (Beursstaat) is central, cheap and cheerful but has far too many stairs.

Grand Kraznapolsky in the main square is expensive and overrated. Avoid.

Oh, and don't order a quattro formaggi pizza unless you like cheese fondue.

Have fun...

I've stayed in the Hampshire Inn on the Prinsengracht a couple of times with my better half. Nice quiet, pretty location, right on a canal, great for walking to some "interesting" bars on the Lijnbaansgracht/ Korte Leidsedwarstraat. Cheap and cheerful but a good little hotel for a short stay.

I'd go back anyway.

Oh. if you're going then I'd highly recommend trying out some good Indonesian restaurants and have a "Rice table" or "Rijstaffel" It's one of the unique things about Amsterdam and if you like trying out lots of dishes in the same meal then this is the one for you. Brilliant.

The NH Van Dolen is nice and really handy for centrum area, the argentine steak oplaces are called Rancho - a particularly good one is just of Leidesplein (spelt something like)- also go to the Jordaan area - there is a particulary nice pub called Cafe Chris.
MY wife is Dutch I go to the dam every month
