American Golf Custom Fit Issue

Good evening,

I purchased a set of custom M6 irons from American golf in June, was fitted 1/2 inch longer 2 degrees up & x-Stiff.
I’ve been playing with the clubs and seeing some improvement, however during a recent lesson with my pro (he had a look at my equipment and was shocked to see I was playing XS) he took it upon him to do a fitting and it came back I should be 1 inch longer 3 degrees up and reg shafts.
Has anyone experienced a misfitting with American Golf, if so how was it resolved? Or any advise would be great full.
I do appreciate 4/5 months have passed however I trusted the ‘experts’ and have been bitten on the bum!

Never had a fitting but I wouldn’t have one at AG. But I’d also imagine you could go to 10 different fitters and get 10 different recommendations.

So many variables.....
Are you 6' 5"?
Shafts can vary immensely in flex and weight and there's no standard on flex either - one company's regular can be the same as another's stiff
What shafts do you currently have and what shafts did your Pro recommend?
A light XS stiff could play similarly to a heavy regular for some people.
A very general barometer is how far do you hit your 7 iron....but there is so much more to it than just swing speed.

I would add that the opinion is that a static fit is just a guideline/ starting point for a full fit with the shafts and heads that you are likely to play.

Did AG do a full fit with the heads and shafts you were intending to buy.

I would go and get an independent fitting as a third opinion.
Everyone’s swing changes from day to day but XS to Reg is a leap even given the difference in shafts.
It sounds like it’s put dought in your mind and that’s not good.

a guy I play with was fitted for stiff graphite shafts (irons) that just happened to be in stock in the shop at the time. he's swing speed with 7 iron is 90mph!!! that's tour average. he was non the wiser at the time as he was a beginner. 4 months later he took them back as instructed to by his pro. American golf had no choice but to refund him (after a short battle).

The issue with AG is how many have actually completed any sort of training and how many walked in on first day and shown how to turn on trackman. I was told that they are very good at manipulating trackman figures with no wind very warm lots of run etc to make you feel better. I hit the driver 230. Never more (often less) anyway went up there a few years back when our pro didn’t have stock of a new ping driver I wanted. Consistently hit the thing 280 odds. Went to a pro at another club to buy it and was 230 hitting it. Not sure what the 50 yard difference was

AG are not custom fitters, very few of their staff have the necessary knowledge and training to provide a good custom fitting experience. They will try and sell you what they have, massage your ego, just about do anything to get the sale. The shop managers and staff receive bonuses for sales performance, I'm not here to say that's wrong but I do know it can affect what the people on the shop floor are doing, at the end of the day they are just trying to make as many sales as possible. If I were to get fit I'd go and see a specialist fitter or go direct to the manufacturers fitting studio. Most pro's dont even carry the range of shafts etc the manufacturer or a specialist fitter will have

Weight of my irons has been bugging me for a while so booked in AG for a fitting yesterday.

Was interested in graphite but after trying in a few heads I couldn't be doing with how they felt. They were horrendous in some of the hollow-headed irons like the i500. All subjective I suppose.

Then worked through some lightweight steel shafts and, after tweaking lie angles / shaft length started to hit the TT Elevate 95 really well in half inch long / 2 deg up.

The Apex 19 and Maverick were by far the best of the bunch but the Apex gave pretty much the same numbers with a better (less chunky) look and a more familiar / preferred forged feel.

Interestingly I'm now in the same length/lie as my JPX850 forged but with a 20g lighter shaft. Fitter also demo'd how, where my 850's had been extended the balance point was heftily out of kilter. Something I'd sensed but couldn't quite put my finger on.

I'm not very good at the golf, and unlikely to get much better. But it's nice to have a set that feel better throughout the swing AND gain over 10 yards with better dispersion.

All in all was in there for an hour and a half and well looked after by a very knowledgeable chap. Everything was well explained, all questions answered honestly. I wasnt pushed down any route and was asked to test everything against my current irons. He even tried to make me up a set that wouldn't be as expensive as the Apex as an alternative (the Maverick).

Theres also an aftercare policy where you check in, two weeks after purchase and then every 4 months after. No extra charge

The reason for the length of the post is because so much negative stuff has been written about AG and I don't feel that's fair.

The reality is quality of fitters vary across all stores and pro shops. (Ive done both) alike.

But if you find a decent fitter you feel you can trust and are balanced about how you look, then theres a absolutely no reason why you shouldn't go AG for a fit.

Can't wait for the new irons to land in a few weeks

I went for a club fitting at my local AG and I found it really helpful albeit I didn’t actually buy anything. However, the fitter didn’t actually work full time at AG and was a pro at another venue. So he wasn’t trying to sell me stock they need to flog. It may have been a different story if I had the other fitter that was working at the time.

Had a fitting a couple of years ago for some Cobra irons.
No complaints, apart from it cost me the price of a useable used car to buy some metal poles for thrashing a golf ball round a field.

Go and see a local Orka fitter and thank me later.

Then you are limited to just one make - great if that’s what you have your eye on - not so great if you want to try a variety before deciding

I go to an independent fitter but some AG are more than good enough - the one at Biggleswade for example

All fittings I have had at AG have been fine. They are like most fitters in that they fit for that moment in time.
As you get older stuff happens, as you get better stuff happens.. things change

I hope the new clubs work and if they offer regular check ups after purchase there should be no problems and after all we all like new clubs

Read my last post. I've had issues but others on here have had decent service so clearly some good AG stores out there. I wouldn't use them having had three different stores give me poor fits but not to say they are all like this
