Anyone know why the Seniors starts at 50 for the Pro's but all the amateur comps seem to be 55 or 60?

I would guess its because amateur seniors want to be competitive a lot longer. How many pro seniors are playing well into the 60's/70's?

I think finances for the Tours and the Players come into it with the Pro's. I guess the Seniors/Champions Tour want to get the big names competing as soon as possible and that's the age at which the players can no longer really compete week in week out with the younger players on the main tours but still have a good 5+ years where they can play to a high standard and earn good money on the Seniors. In amateur golf it's different as there isn't the same financial element either for the players or the people running the events.

Moving on slightly, does anyone know for sure when you become over 55, ie is it on the date of the tournament or Jan 1st.

Reason for asking I am 54 7/12ths

Our club is 60, and fortunately I have got a few years yet before I have to play with the gerry's. In tennis it is 45 for a lot of amateur events.
