For the last two years since I have got back into golf, when I have played golf it has been predominately tues and Thursday when it has been competition days. Anything from 9 hole stapleford to 18 hole stapleford and medal.

now the winter season has started there seemed to be no reason to change that until today. Played in a three ball and one of my PP decided to just have a knock around. Just to try a few things?

as it happened I then noticed only 6-8 people played in the comp this week and six played in it last week ( in which I won and made £1).

as the 9 holer went on it was obvious I was not goin to win another quid so tried a few things which in a competition situation I would never of done. Including for the first time leathering my 913fd straight down the 9th fairway off the tee. Which went further than I have hit it with my SLDR.

My point is where have all the competition players gone and are they doin what I should be doin and just playing a few rounds for the laugh and trying a few different things. I enjoy the competition side of things but should I take a rack off* over the winter and just enjoy the game.

* Take a rack off, is pit terminology for slowing things down a bit. The speed of a coal cutting machine was determined by turning up the racks to speed things up and lowering the racks or taking a rack off to slow the machine down.

Working?

November to March (inclusive) does seem to be 'non-competition' time, if not 'non-competitive'! Why that (still) is probably just reflects the conservative (aka still in the past) nature of Golf Clubs as it's much less likely that weather/conditions will affect play all that much - in many areas of the country.

Better to enjoy every round, treating competition ones just the same as practice ones if possible!

Missing competitive guys are probably all beating each other up at Football or Rugby (League)!

We only run a weekly and monthly stableford in the winter which leaves plenty of time for casual golf and the weekend rollup. It's sometimes good to play without card and pencil, especially if you've been having lessons and working on the range. Go out without worrying about a score and just try and do what you've been doing. If you're not having lessons, it's still applicable and you can try some stuff. I sometimes hit a 3 wood off the tee which doesn't go too far especially with the wet ground. It leaves longer approaches in than normal
