In thinking that any time I watch golf from Celtic Manor that the courses/place just look uninspiring and somewhat depressing?? Am I wrong in thinking that? I mean it just doesn't seem to have the aura of say Gleneagles or Wentworth to me....

it does look to have vast open spaces around the course. this could be to allow more spectators in and make it easier for them to move around the place.

It does look souless on the TV but I'm pretty sure its decent enough if youa re watching and even better if you're playing it. What about the London Club last week. Not exactly your Wentworth in terms of looks or character but a good test of golf for the pros. It looked barren and wild (bit like the Oxfordshire) but who cares what it looks like on screen if you are there in the flesh (playing or watching)

I can understand what you are saying, but I dont think many of the smaller tour events that have such a poor field playing in it would have the crowds like say the BMW or the European Open, when it comes to the Ryder Cup it will surely be different.
It does look like there is a huge amount of space around but try playing it and that space disappears before your eyes.

Yeah, but you are looking at Wales.

Ouch!

Does it not rain in England , Scotland or Ireland ?
Is The Belfry picturesque ? After all it's in the midlands, not exactly Loch Lomand is it, and I bet that looks bleak in bad weather.

You can always come over and have a look for yourselves rather than take the TV pictures as your guide. I will be happy to give you a tour of the resort and the surrounding areas are there for you to try.
And if you still think it's bleak, well you still would have had a warm welcome from us here.

I agree Dodger. The course definitely seems to lack definition, and I'm pretty sure it is always overcast there :o The 'rolling valleys' that can be seen make it slightly more iconic, but I just can't put my finger on the missing component that deprives the course of being considered a spectacle. I think packed to capacity with crowds on Ryder Cup Sunday the view of the course will certainly be improved- am I right in thinking it was designed as a 'stadium' course? This would surely lend itself to a need for large crowds to allow the course to play at its full potential.

I know what you mean Dodger, I'm sure it will look better at the RC but I don't think I would rush down there and stump up the green fee. It doesn't look finished to me. A little bird told me who is in the know at The Belfry that they have been put on "stand by" for next year if the 2010 isn't up to scratch, can't see that happening though with all the money Terry Matthews has pumped into Celtic Manor.
