Am I a grumpy old golfer

Just reading the golf reports in the local paper. A gentleman who was playing on what I know to be quite a difficult course has won the Club's first 2012 Stableford competition with fifty (50) points playing of a H/Cap of 28, although fourteen of the holes were temporary, he did not score on the first hole but from the fifth hole dropped only seven shots to par and scored 27 points on the back nine helped by an eagle on the par five fifteenth which was on the normal green, (and it is likely that this comp is not a qualifier either!!!)
I am afraid that this sort of thing is spoiling my enjoyment of competion golf, is it not time that we had a Handicap system that was fair to all. When I first started you were given a 24 H/C and were soon reduced to one shot per hole, the way to win then was to play and practice until you could compete.

Yes, you are grumpy. Temporary greens make the course really short, and 50 points on temps is not that unusual at my club. Stick said individual off the back tees, proper greens, put a medal card in his hands, and that is what his handicap is for, and how it is maintained.

Bythesea, everyone has a day out once in a while. Now, if he did something similar recently or does it again in the near future, questions have got to be asked. I wouldnt get too wound up over it, Ive seen hackers cream a long iron and great golfers fluff chips, everything averages out though.

I agree with Murph, winter golf off front tees to winter greens isn't a real test of golf. Wait 'till April and see if he can do it off the whites in the first big comp of the season ;)

If he does it in those conditions then he should be nailed to the club flagpole, tarred, feathered and told not to be such a naughty boy in future. His handicap should also be decimated accordingly ;)

Mmmm 28hc, temp greens, winter comp. It's always going to happen.

But, I would be more concerned with my own score. Thats all that matters.
 
It happens. I once got 49 points playing off 28 - on a "proper" course. It's still my best ever gross score and not had a score anything like it since. It's them that do it time after time that you need to get grumpy about.

That would account for his 50pts, 99.9% of the time anyway.

Every dog and all that. 50 isn't unusual on some courses in winter. Heck I know courses where 43 in summer won't make top three of the division in the monthly stableford. If he can do it once the course is back at full length then fair play to him but he'll be waving 28 and plenty more goodbye if he does.
 
Its pretty common at this time of year at my course to see those type of scores.
Forward tees and winter greens, its the older type guy with the good short game, 20+ h/cap, all of a sudden he can reach every par4 in 2 shots, makes a Huge difference
I dont normally worry.
If you are that concerned, roll up, have a social game, dont bother entering the Sweep.
 
To be honest, at my course you need to be in the mid forties to win and place if a stableford comp at any time of year and 50 in the winter would not be unexpected. At my place playing to your handicap will not get you anywhere near the leaderboard in any comp

Now This Is What Makes Me Well Grumpy, Call me pedantic, BUT, " handicap should also be decimated accordingly" means that his handicap should be reduced by 10 %. Decem = 10 . Thus his handicap would reduce from 28 to 25.2. clearly still too high.

The use of the word decimate is incorrect, you want to use a word that means to reduce dramatically, like plummet or crash.

Yes you are a pedant but hey what the heck. The issue of course is it being a non qualifier anyway and so anything good or bad won't affect the handicap. Luck of the draw I guess to win with a once in a blue moon score and keep the 28 tag
