I was just watching one of the more recent videos on the European Tour site, in which Alvaro Quiros is interviewed:

http://www.europeantour.com/videoaudio/video/videoid=159222.html

Given that he's (one of) the longest hitters on tour, I couldn't help but notice that he has quite a short backswing compared to others. In fact, it's almost unusually short. The video illustrates it well.

Same again here (with an iron):

I suppose my question is then: where is he getting the power from? I get that he's doing everything right elsewhere, but I would have thought the shorter backswing robs him of a little extra power compared with others (not that I'm comparing him to John Daly's extended backswing, but you know what I mean)?

Massive amount of lag generated by incredible amount of hand/wrist speed/strength. Also really good hip rotation.

Most important of all...timing.

I have changed my back swing to what feels 3/4 as i had a big overswing

It looks about the same as this guys and i have improved my ball striking and distance

Luke Donald has a sensible backswing also, seems it prevents getting off plane etc

It only took me 4 years to discover this :)

Not wasted energy. He does enough to generate the swing speed he has and no more. Lots of golfers could learn something from his swing, you are in more control with a shorter swing and there is les distance for things to go wrong.

another long hitter who has a short swing is gary woodland....imho i reckon he is the longest there is.

he at the moment plays a 75% swing and relies on a fade and still hits it well out there,he also plays a 3 wood a lot.

i have a big problem with overswing. really should try to cut it down. enjoyed that video with butch. he a character!

Hi Wolfman,
I also have a huge overswing. Can you tell me how long it took you to overcome this problem & how you went about it?
Thanks mate,

Slime.

I suffered from this when I first started playing and to be honest it is quite hard to get out of the habit of doing it. I had somebody stand behind me with a alignment stick and hold it up along my backswing line so when I swung back if my club touched the stick then I knew I was overswinging. It stopped me from doing it again and have never done it since. Here is a vid from Mark Crossfield addressing the problem:

Sorry to hijack by the way!!

I've had this problem for over 25 years, so it's going to be a bitch to get over.
Oh...............and no need to apologise.............thanks for your thoughts .

Slime.

No worries. It is a highly destructive fault and one that causes no end of problems. Can be a variety of causes as well- Poor loose grip, Over rotating the list is endless. Good luck
