Algarve proof of handicap

I will be going on my first ever trip to the Algarve on 8th Sept. The resort is Carvoeiro.


I note most of the courses I checked out on the net require proof of handicap. Not a problem for me, but neither of 2 my son-in-laws have active handicaps. One has moved location and not joined a club yet, in fact he has not been a member of a club for over a year. He played off 10 when last a member at Mid Herts. The other is just a recreational member of a club with no handicap and plays mainly society golf with an unofficial society handicap 18.


For anyone that is familiar with the Algarve courses; can you tell me how strict are they on proof of handicap? What are the chances of getting turned away?

Played many times round the Oceanico courses in the Algarve. Never been asked for a handicap certificate.

You are much more likely to be asked for proof if you look like a tourist trying golf for the first time.

If you turn up in flip flops and ask for a rental set they might ask you.

If you roll in with your own kit and have your shirt tucked in they wont bat an eyelid

Never been asked - provided you look the part and nobody's hacking up the putting green before going out - I wouldn't expect an issue!

you could always do what some on here condone and just LIE and make one up on your pc,why not go the whole hog and declare yourself as a pro and try and get on for free!!!!!!!!!

Played in Portugal many times, including courses such as Penina and never been asked for a certificate.

I was there in June this year and played Gramacho, Pinta and alto, never once asked for a handicap

As someone previously said, long as you look the part you should be ok.

Never got asked for one last year despite duffing it off the 1st tee in front of the starter

It's only the old course thay you have to produce your H/C cert. no show no play!!!!

After quite a few years of playing Spain/Portugal/Turkey, the only request I have had for members of our group was the National in Belek. But then, if you saw our regular group, you would be more likely to ask for bus passes.

National in Belek is a lovely course. Went in December last year, played the Pasha, Sultan and Faldo too. Didn't get asked on any of them despite the websites saying you needed them.
