Can you play San Lorenzo without staying at either Don Filipa or Amarante Formosa Park hotels? We have just booked to stay nearby in Quinta de Lago and were hoping to play SL.
Been a regular visitor for years, and am lucky enough to have played Monte Rei probably a dozen times or more - its head and shoulders above every other course in the region, and justifies the price tag.
My opinion on the others referred to here?
San Lorenzo - decent layout but the worst customer service I have had anywhere, ever. Not worth the money.
The Faldo - tricked up beyond belief. Barely deserves to be called a golf course.
QDL - all three courses are excellent, the pick being Laranjal. Great layout with the best greens I have ever played on.
VDL - love The Ocean. If you play with a hook, watch out you don't put a window in at Alan Shearer's holiday gaff down by the 11th green.
Victoria - not cheap, bit of a resort course but very enjoyable.
The Old Course - way, way too busy. Cracking Algarve track but be prepared for a slooooww round.
The other Oceanico courses? Okay, nothing more. There are equally good courses for a fraction of the green fee over near Tavira.
I like Ria and Cima. Both are really good value for money, and Ria has some nice views down on the coast. Not on a par, if you'll pardon the pun, with the QDL and VDL courses, but worth a visit nevertheless. Both are an enjoyable alternative to the more expensive courses. Can get busy because they're on a Robinson holiday complex, so lots of German golfers about. We play them out of season when they're quieter.
Played Benamor several years ago. Not long, quite tight in places, and an okay track.
I wouldn't put any of them on a list of must plays, but if you're over that way at about 50 Euros a whack you can't really go wrong.
Benamor is fairly short and not too difficult. However, the thing I like most about it is that it feels like a golf club - not a golf-themed tourist attraction.
Im off to Armacao de pera saturday. Its a famly holiday but id love to have a knock while over there. Which course would be best to play at reasonable cost around that area? How much would i be looking at including club hire?
