Aldeburgh or Ipswich? (or Woodbridge or Thorpeness?)

Sorry to disagree about Aldbrough but compared to Thorpeness it is pretty boring. Every hole is different at Thorpeness, the same cannot be said about Aldbrough. Woodbridge is my favourite but Purdis is also a great course. I’ve played all 4 in the last couple of months.

Played Ipswich yesterday. We thoroughly enjoyed the course. Which was in great condition considering the recent weather. The greens were very slow (on purpose) and receptive which took some getting used to.

There aren’t really any poor holes on the course, the approach to the 4th and the 5th was the weakest stretch in my opinion.

The whole course was framed beautifully, bunkers were well placed and in good condition. It was a fair test, with multiple way to play many of the holes, which unfortunately my golf didn’t live up to.

We were made to feel welcome from the moment we arrived. Everyone we met from the Pros to the bar staff couldn’t have been more friendly, which isn’t always the case as a visitor.

If I lived closer I would e a member.

Just looked on the Aldeburgh site and the dress code says that knee length socks are required with shorts. Leaving aside that it is an awful look, it completely removes the point of wearing shorts in the first place! No doubt long socks are helpfully available at a price in the club shop to assist those who don’t check the dress code. No wonder golf still retains its stuffy reputation.

Well regardless of personal preference it seems that East Anglia has some great courses - those in Suffolk and the links of north Norfolk…definitely worthy of a trip in future ??

Thought Aldeburgh was a cracking course, personally I would never avoid a course worth playing because of its dress code.
I can maybe see the issue of joining a course though it wouldn't generally stop me.
But my enjoyment of clothes is massively surpassed by my enjoyment of golf.

a bit random of me to reply when these are two year old messages but these 4 courses are what i have to choose from evry time i play. it massively depends on personal preference, wether you want to feel like a scratch golfer playing at wentworth then aldeburgh definatly has that vibe to it, the condiitions are always immaculate and it feels like a treat to play there (as reflected in the price). woodbridge and thorpness are similar- conditioon is always good but they lack on the facility side, at thorpness there is a range but you have to use and colllect your own balls, and at ipswich there is only 4 or 5 bays, Ipswich is the goldilocks of these, nice facilities with nets, practice greens and a "chipping range" with restraunts too. but at the end of the day you could easily spend a day at any of these and not be disappointed, i love thorpness for the scenery and the difficulty of long par fours, i love ipswich for the beutiful heathland and the tight fairways, i love aldeburgh for the heritage and heather lining the rough which gives you no chance of finding your ball if it drifts off the fairway, and woodbridge i love for the more relaxed approach and a great mixture of woodland and heathland on each hole.
so choose any! everyone will have a different order of ranking for the four, but i struggle to do more than a four way tie

Thorpeness is the weaker of the other three......played them quite a few times and loved them all,
I lived in Suffolk for a year and it is where my wife came from and the in laws lived.

Only played Purdis Heath once but can’t remember seeing any practice facilities as such. There is food service at the clubhouse, not sure it qualifies as a “restaurant” 🙃

Either way it’s a lovely quirky course.

your right, "resaurant" is optimistic for any golf course cafe. theyve got some relatively new facilities now by the clubhouse next to the practice green.

Purdis has 3 or 4 nets into which to hit, along with a "par 3" style practice hole which you can hit towards from a grass lie, there is also a chipping green with bunkers, as well as a large putting green and a smaller one close by the first tee. There is also a practice area, to the left of the 17th/18th holes, with a couple of covered bays from which you can hit longer shots....though it is very much a "use and collect your own balls" sort of facility!

Some of these facilities are, as @TedLovesGolf says, relatively new....if my memory serves me correctly, I think they were put in around 2011/12, shortly after my brief membership at Purdis ended.

Improvements sound great, they were not there when I played, think the first time was about 1986, the last time I played there was about 1995.

Woodbridge
Aldeburgh
Ipswich
All fantastic, I’d rank them in that order with Ipswich being one of the friendliest clubs I’ve visited.
Royal Worlington & Newmarket is also class

Lived in Suffolk for over a year, and played them all, very hard to rank as they are all top class, would like to add Felixstowe in there as well.
