Airports.....why?Just why??

Just back from a trip that took me through Newcastle,Brussels and Florence airports and while sitting waiting in Brussels for the connecting flight I thought to myself that I have done a fair bit of travelling this year and not 1 airport I have been in has had.....

a) A place to purchase decent food.

or

b) Food at a decent price.

Example......slice of alleged Pizza Hut pizza in Brussels that was 8 euro for the slice and was just awful,wouldn't have given it to the dog!!

How hard is it to produce decent bait for travelers and why is everything so bloody expensive in Airports?????!!!:angry:
 
It's the classic "Trapped punter syndrome" You cannot go anywhere so they will charge whatever they see fit. If you buy it at 5 times normal price then you make up the deficit for the other travellers that will not buy. When me and the missus go on holiday, usually 4 weeks per year we always take a packed lunch to eat in the airport, although a pint at £4.00 always makes us shudder. Robbing bar stewards.

I do the same whenever possible on the way out but hard to do on the way back unfortunately.....I had an unused bottle of coke that was purchased when through security in Florence yesterday that of course had to be ditched when I went back through at Brussels....not easy to take when it cost me 3euro then that was compounded by the fact the next bottle I purchased was 3 and a half euro!!!:o
 
Everywhere you go be it sporting events, concerts, festivals, airports or even just to the cinema and someone is trying to rip you off for food and drink. It really does grind my gears but nothing is going to change. It is actually getting worse, the amount of places that stop you taking in your own food, drink or beer so as they can sell their rip of merchandise is increasing.

But I agree about the rest, total rip off with staff who dont care.

I'm off to the Olympic football tomorrow and no food or drink is allowed in the stadium...........so they can sell (rip-you-off) an unhealthy unhygenic sandwich and drink for the price of a restaurant meal:angry:

As for cost of food, the airport operators charge the restaurants/shops a hefty sum to trade there, so they have to recoup that. Quality is hard to maintain from low quality products and wages to keep the overheads down. This on top of a captive audience creates the perfect storm. One easy answer, don't pay if you don't want it, I'm sure you can go a couple of hours without food? You can always ask for tap water if you need a drink on the aircraft.

Agree with the concensus that Airports require a considerable rent from the tenants but the main cost is staffing. A lot of units have extremely long opening hours, 365 days per year. Staff are generally paid more than min wage and added security to receiving goods/staff checks all, unfortunately, adds to the price of a meal.

There is an element of profiteering from a captive audience, but a Restaurant in an airport cannot be compared to one on the highstreet due to these added costs of running the business.

Fine and dandy if you can go without bait but some of us have to eat due to illness.I like to carry a coke with me but should have been prepared with some Haribos in case of an emergency.
 
Just had this conversation yesterday , flew back from Lanzarote on mon night, had to empty the babys bottle before security check , then once you are past the point of no return the juice that was 80cent is €3 , the water that was 80c is €2.80 & a bloody small bottle of coke was €3.60... total rip off ..

as scouser said "captive audience" you would do well to last the hour & half before boarding without buying a drink it was so warm ... ROBBERS the lot of them
 
Fortunately, I nip into the lounge.. The food/drink is still aweful, but atleast you dont have to pay for it.

Alternatively, if you fly often, consider Priority Pass (havent tried it, but seen too many advts on inflight mags)
 
Friend of mine has the attitude of drink as much as he can and still have the ability to appear slightly sober and can stand up. Then he just sleeps as much of the flight as he can.

If he wasn't a pilot with EasyJet I could understand it ....
