AI threats to employment

Let me put it this way: Hopefully, humanity (!) is wise enough to integrate a control mechanism, especially in times (of war) like these!

Otherwise, “Terminator” (you know: “I'll be back!”) could become reality sooner than we would like!

“Love is blind!” as the saying goes.

I hope that infatuation with technology is immune to this!

Every new innovation is going to lead to job cuts & rising unemployment. We’ve been hearing this for many, many years.

Equally, each new innovation generates jobs, e.g. were there any aircraft engineers in 1850?
Since 1700 technology has been used to make humans redundant. Not much difference between Jethro Tulls seed drill and AI, they are all designed to replace humans (and remove the associated costs). The few extra jobs created are insignificant compared to the people who are put out of work. My advice… get a trade. It’s practically AI proof.

The bigger question is what will happen to all the “spare” people. I have my own theory but I’ll keep it in my bacofoil wrapped heed. 😁

Learning a trade is the one. Both my lads went into construction. Never out of work.
Youngest said "if I'd gone to uni I'd be making frappucinos in Costa with £30k of debt now"
Has just bought his own house.

Notably, despite huge automation, unemployment in human society is generally low throughout history with only small localised spasms of difference (e.g. Great Depression). AI won’t make inevitable mass long term unemployment any more than the internet, the computer, mass electricity, or the Industrial or Agricultural Revolutions (all far greater changes) did. If you’re in the wrong specialism then you’ll suffer in the same way as typewriter repair shops and Blockbuster video, but with useful abstraction skills (critical thinking, ability to self-research and self-teach new skills) anyone will be just fine.

"Well, forgive me for being so inquisitive; but during the past few weeks, I’ve wondered whether you might be having some second thoughts about the mission"
Wouldn’t change my job for the world , it’s quite niche, challenging and sometimes mental. If I could change the people though or be rid of a lot of them I would be even happier 🤣

All achieved during a global population boom.

(My posts yesterday were merely quotes from the HAL 9000 computer in the film 2001 Space Odyssey. I put myself in the position of AI. I searched as quickly as I could for appropriate comments and responses. It was interesting to see how this was taken as "genuine" even though I had used quotation marks.)

So will AI cause unemployment and a social cost, or will it be a great benefit to society?

I think it will be an economic factor similar to tobacco and alcohol.
Used and abused, a money making business for some, problems and difficulties for others, government control and regulation varying through the years in catch-up mode.
Some entertainment obtained for the masses, but also some added confusion to human understanding.
It may cause some employment as well as some unemployment, but many other factors will be more influential on employment levels overall.

I can see a practical benefit in scientific applications and analysis, but this has been going on for some time already.
