Advice on what club to start with

You joined the forum nearly 5 years ago and you've never played?
That's taking a long time to get ready for your first game. :D

I'd suggest 8 iron, wedge and putter.

Went off it a bit and a tad busy - I live in Rugby so plenty of courses to choose from - this Par 3 is at Stoneleigh - what about a hybrid ?

A hybrid will get you to the 166 yard hole if well hit but isn't necessary when you're starting out, our first shots in golf are extremely variable and we're just as likely to mishit the ball 10 yards as hit it 100 yards.

The 8 iron will be a good club to tee off with and get you close to most greens when hit well.

As it would be the first shot of the day, I would get my 4-iron, give it a little more than half-swing, hard, low and straight, run it onto the green.
Just like a lot of shots that I hit from under the trees at my club.

But I might be the only person that day you see do this, unless someone else did a bit of a mis-hit.

If you're just starting out and playing a par 3 course, you only need a 7 iron, sand wedge and putter really. You can play all the shot types you'll need with those. It doesn't matter if you can't reach every green, leaving it short will give you a chance to practice your short game/chipping anyway.

Do you have some clubs and are seeking advice on expected hit-distances?

Or are you considering buying/acquiring some suitable clubs?

If it is the latter, I could let you have some for nowt, to get started with. You are not far away - postage or collection would be up to you.
They will be charity shop donations otherwise.

5-iron and 9-iron
