Advice On Newcastle

Can anyone advise on a place to stay in Newcastle? We're coming up for a friends party in June. She has suggested somewhere around the "Quayside" but has anyone got a better suggestion?

PS Anyone want a game on the Sunday?

We use the Holiday Inn Express near the station. It’s basic but clean. Pretty central and, importantly, it has a multi storey car park next door.

Hilton Gateshead. It's right on the river and has stunning views of the bridges. Right next door to The Sage and The Baltic which are both good for a wander around even if you're not going to a show at The Sage. 5 mins walk to the Quayside, 10-15 mins into the city centre proper or the railway station.

Get a room on the 5th floor with a balcony overlooking the bridges. We've had one a couple of times this year, it's definitely worth paying a little extra (it's not much), and you will get access to the exec lounge for free food and alcohol on the night (5-7), and free breakfast with a great view.

It aint free if you’re paying for the extras

If it is a weekend then the prices will not drop. Occupancy rates in Newcastle are high as it is a party city.

Do you want to be in the centre? Is that were the party is? If not then you could stay outside in a pleasant village or market town where it would be cheaper.

Avoid Premier Inns or Travelodges. They will be full of stag and hen parties.

The Quayside is the area along the river. Lovely part of the city, successfully redeveloped and the best for hotels, views, walks, bars etc. Not cheap though. If you want to splash the cash then The Hilton, as already mentioned, The Vermont, Malmaison, Copthorne would be spot on. A cunning one might be the Jurys Inn which is on the Gateshead side but is only a 5 minute walk across the Millennium Bridge to the Newcastle side. Cheaper price because it is on the wrong side but actually it is close enough and nice enough not to matter.

If you are happy to be outside the very centre then hotels in Jesmond would be worth looking at. There is a Holiday Inn in Jesmond that would be okay for you.

If you pick a couple out please mention which ones and we can guide you to the best option. You don't want a ropey one opposite the station or in the heart of Gateshead for example.

Make sure you visit The Free Trade Inn when you're there... one of the best pubs in the UK.

Walker, ha ha. Good luck mate. Don't look for a hotel near there. At least the beer should be cheap.

Walker is slightly to the east of the city. I would be tempted to go for the Holiday Inn in Jesmond if the price is okay. Close to the centre if you want to go in at some point, only a few miles from Walker.

One thing perhaps to look at. Have you tried Airbnb? You could well get a Quayside apt at a decent price. Plenty of them there, all very swish and should come with a parking slot. Worth checking out.

Malmaison is nice but get a room on the front and all you'll hear all night are taxi drivers chatting and car doors slamming.
There's loads to choose from but as already mentioned, it's stag/hen do season so choose wisely and book early.
Hilton is smart as owt, would be my choice if you don't mind spending a bit more.

Walker is to the East of Newcastle. Tynemouth would be a nice place to stay & not far away. The Grand Hotel looks very nice.

Picked a random Friday night after Xmas. Queen deluxe is £105. Queen Exec which is the same room but with a balcony and exec lounge access is £120. 15 quid for 2 hours free food and drink early evening, plus a balcony with cracking view is money well spent.

You're not selling this thing for me LT. We've booked something though. Due to MIB making me look in a different area that then brought up a Premier Inn in.....Holystone. Three nights for £161. Attached to a nice pub. A mile from the metro. That will ding dang do for me! Negotiations have opened on playing golf!!!!!

CF - That is a typical PI in a featureless but not unpleasant place. You can't argue at that price. Don't judge Newcastle based on where you are staying or Walker itself. Go into Newcastle via the metro, get down to the Quayside area, go over to Tynemouth and walk along the front etc. Plenty of lovely places to go to and see.

If you let people know the dates you are free for golf I am sure we can get a few of us together for a game somewhere. You wont be left golfless

Firm things up nearer the time, now is too early in reality, and we will sort something out somewhere. Plenty of options from forum members up here, whether midweek or at a weekend.

As mentioned above holystone itself is not particularly the most exciting place, however it does sound like an excellent base for what you have planned.

Pretty close to the metro if you want to get out to the coast or town and don't fancy taking the car. I'd recommend getting the metro to tynemouth for tea one evening and leaving the car. Some great pubs/cafes.

Also, you are really close to the rising sun country park. In fact walking distance, would definitely recommend going through the day if you get the chance.

And then the golf, just off the A19 pretty close to where it merges with the A1. I'd say the sky is your limit in terms of where is accessible by car. I'd recommend heading up the coast to bamburgh or the likes if after something scenic.

Like has been said, get in touch closer to the time, be plenty of people willing to meet up.
