Advice On Newcastle

Newcastle has change a lot over the years, in the city centre right next to Greys Monument there are loads of eateries, franchise based or standalone, more bars than you quite possibly even entertain visiting them all.

You can get on a open top bus tour and do the touristy thing, the Millenium bridge opens or tilts at set times daily, not all that exciting watch a bridge slowly tilt, but everyone has to see it happen once. Baltic art gallery and the Sage are good places to have a wander around, the Castle Keep, has some cracking views of the city once you get to the top, tour of St James Park.

On a night out depending on your taste in music and partying, there are pub/bars to go to and ones to avoid.

A little and I mean little place that recently open is Billy Bootleggers dive bar, live music on Friday and the weekend nights, free to get in and a pretty good selection of bourbons.

I must go there - I love chocolate biscuits!

lots of "gin palaces" as well. went in one last week called Dacantus. 2 gins and tonic was over £16! They weren't even doubles, they only sell in 35cl measures. Place was packed as well.

As mentioned above holystone itself is not particularly the most exciting place, however it does sound like an excellent base for what you have planned.

Pretty close to the metro if you want to get out to the coast or town and don't fancy taking the car. I'd recommend getting the metro to tynemouth for tea one evening and leaving the car. Some great pubs/cafes.

Its not that close, nearest metro is probably Northumberland Park which is a good 15 minute walk.

They've just opened a Premier Inn on the seafront at Whitley Bay, if you can get it for a similar price, I'd book that. Plenty pubs and restaurants on your doorstep.

Palmersville, just on great line road is about half a mile. 20 min walk at best.

Whitley Bay ! You're joking right, the place is a dump

when were you last there?

it's definitely on the up. the promenade has had a really nice facelift, the dome at Spanish City is being renovated and will be stunning if the pictures so far are anything to go by. It's no longer the destination of choice for stag and hen do's which is a good thing. there are a load of new cafes and restaurants. If the OP can get a good deal on accom, I'd much rather stay there than the middle of a housing estate like Holystone.

Northumberland Park is nearest, 0.6 miles, Palmersville is 0.9. Not sure I'd be wanting to walk either route in the dark tho. Nothing sinister, just that neither would be straightforward for a first time visitor.

Don't forget CF is there in June, plenty of daylight.

Agree about Whitley Bay, it has had a real tidy up. The hen & stags have been booted out and it is definitely getting there. Tynemouth is a nicer wander, tie in with the market at the Metro station at the weekend, but Whitley is much improved and on the way up.

I've done the Holystone to Whitely Bay Metro walk, in December at 4 in the morning, but that's another story, I may tell if I'm drunk, it was a long time ago
