hi guys after some advice..have been thinking of getting my grips fattened because i have large hands!will it affect my swing in anyway?is it a common thing?
Quite a few people I know have been down this road - I think some find it more re-assuring to have fatter grips however I havent noticed any of them playing any better!! - quite the reverse in fact.
I think people like to tinker with length, width and all sorts when in fact they need far more basic advice on swing, set up or other help.
I would get your clubs custom fitted as a first step - that will provide you in depth analysis of the width thats most beneficial to your current game.
I just picked up a wedge from Ebay that has 2 x wraps to make it thicker and it is far less easy to control than thinner grips IMHO. I am getting it put back to normal asap as its a pig!
I agree with Homer, seek some advice, I went to a Ping demo night and after being measured by the Ping technician and going on the Trackman monitor all i needed for now was bigger grips on my existing clubs, they will measure your hand and recommend the correct size.
An easy way to tell the size of grip required is to hold the club, your fingers should just touch the pad of your hand, if they dont meet you need thinner grips if they are digging into the pad you need fatter grips.
You can go to the Golf Grips link for advice on grip size, if the measurements recommend a thicker grip then go to your local pro for advice. Only change one grip in your set and try it before you commit to a complete change.
The rule of thumb is fatter = less wrists, thinner = more wristy shots.
The ideal grip size is where your top hand (left hand if you're right handed) is put in position on the grip, your middle finger (the longest one) should just about press (not dig in deep or barely touch)into the fleshy pad of your palm under the thumb. I have quite long fingers so use Lamkin Crossline full cord standard .580 ribbed grips with 2 layers of tape.
