I am off to Portugal in a couple of weeks, it will be the first time I have taken my clubs on a plane. I have got a travel bag but my driver is a lot longer than the rest of my clubs and only just fits in the bag and looks a bit exposed as it sticks up so much. How well are golf clubs treated by airlines? How do I make sure it doesn't get damaged in transit?

unless your bag has a hard case..... honestly I'd leave it at home, if you're just playing some casual golf then you can do without it. Personally I wouldn't risk it.

They are chucked around either by handlers or conveyors the same as any other bag. I'd agree with adam6177. You may be okay but why take the risk?

I am going to play in a tournament, so I really need to take my own clubs. I wondered if I could stuff something like bubblewrap in the void to make the driver more secure.

Make sure you open the bag and check them whilst still in the airport. My old Mans 913 Driver shaft snapped on british airways. And they wouldn't help as he'd already left the airport

wrap clothes around it especially the shaft. Make sure nothing moves and if any handlers stand on a bag or chuck it it's well padded with clothes/towels etc
Also make sure you have insurance......just in case.

put your clubs in the bag as usual then wrap a couple of towels or jumpers around the exposed clubs, the bag then goes into a travel bag and your sorted. took my clubs to spain last year with no issues. if you can put your golf shoes and spare balls ect in the golf bag/travel bag then you should still have weight in your hand luggage to suffice

If you need to take it, sounds like you do, the advice about padding the top of the bag is very good. Don't leave any part proud in the bag. Wrap towels, jumpers, clothes etc around the head so that part of the bag in no longer flexible. That will create strength and prevent damage. Common sense, if you think dropping it from 10ft could break it then pad it some more.

I tend to wrap a towel around my clubs and then the bag head cover. Not guaranteed to keep them safe but seems to have worked for me

This is the way to go. I travelled worldwide with my clubs for many years using a Club Glove stiff arm similar to the one in the link. I never had a problem.

Whether you use a broom handle or a stiff arm, make sure it is an inch or so longer than your driver.

I've travelled many times with my own clubs and never had a problem. As stated, worth checking them soon as they come off the carousel if you are really paranoid though.

You coukd also check at your club with the members, pro, secretary who may have a hardcase to lend or hire out.

All that with a broom handle is 5 star treatment for your beloved clubs
