Bill, you have the same problem as me in the backswing in that you stand up and flatten the shoulders. Jim says the shoulders at the top should point to a point no more than 48 inches outside of the ball.
With regards to the shanks, these are more likely to be blades than shanks. As you roll the club back the face opens way up and is open when you come to impact. A shank will send the ball 45 degrees right, I don't think yours will fly as much as that.
