Advice from someone who knows (bob) and from every one else pish!!!

Putter length, head shape, weight, really is a matter of personal preference.I know some low handicappers who are always 3 putting, and some high handicappers who can sink putts from anywhere on the green,on a regular basis.
As for the AG staff, all i can say is "what a joke !!".Before i stopped playing 3 years ago,my local AG was managed by a non golfer, the assistant manager was a non golfer, and the rest of the staff played occassionally !!
A good friend of mine (who plays off 3) was admiring some bladed irons in AG one afternoon, one of the staff (without knowing his handicap) approached him and suggested he look at some game improvement irons as "blades are aimed at the better player"

NO im not talking about custom fit.....there were 2 off the shelf sizes .....is it for short people and tall people or just the way you address the ball.....does the wrist to floor measurement come in to it?

It's the way you address the ball. I have 0.5 extra on my irons, but a 33" putter - thats just my putting style. Wrist to floor measurement is largely irrelevant. You may have a crouching style like Jack Nicklaus or upright like Tiger.

It's practically impossible to give you any meaningful advice as we can't see your stroke. The person at AG may have seen your stroke and thus I would have thought they could have made a suggestion?

There are lots of different putters out there. Different lengths, weights, balance, inserts, mallets, blades etc etc so which one is right for you?

It's a bit like asking whats your favourite colour and then asking why.

Why do people want a new putter? because they "fall out" with their old one and a new putter will improve their stroke.

The molecullar structure of your putter is still the same as it was the day you bought it, so nothing has changed there.
It's a bit like drivers, people keep changing them in an attempt to find one that will work for them instead of chosing one and sticking with it.

But unlike drivers a putter only swings back so far and so far through. You doesn't need to worry about shaft performance, torque and pureing.

Just swing it back and swing it through. Thats it.
There's nothing too complicated about it compared to chosing a driver.

Find a head you like the look of, find a nice weight for you, a nice face and the right length and practice.

One last point....
I have never shortened a putter and then been asked to lengthen it again.

Cheers for that reply bob....

I have not fallen out of love with my putter it was one i got years ago as part of a starter set so it has been my true love. Up until i got new irons I never thought of changing and now Im thinking its time to get out and live a little....try a couple of new girls .... :D

With your advice ill confidently play the field and know ill have safe golfing :D

"Playing golf is like making love to a beautiful woman"

BTW

Lee Westwood has got a standard putter and when he fell out with it not too long ago, he switched back to a belly putter for a while.

And he's back to the normal one again.

Until next time.

Scouser, why dont you try the 32" and 35" putters then decide what feels better, if it doesn't feel right then it probably isn't.

My experience with putters is i had a hippo blade style then swapped to a mizuno mallet and after a short while i tried a ping anser, with a bit of practice and the help of a veasy my putting is a lot better with more of a consistant stroke.

My opinion may not count as i'm a high handicap hacker

Your opinion doesnt count full stop..... I will try a few clubs but i noticed a massive difference playing with clubs that where a lot shorter than i am used to and now i have had two lessons i realised its cos my stance was all wrong and i now fit my clubs :o

That's usually the case.

If you are a short arse then i would assume a shorter putter is the right one though thats an assumption and not a fact!

Have fun trying new putters though.

I object to that I have long arms

I think you might have the right answer yourself, ask a load
of golfers their advice on putters, length, make, model, etc
then tell them their opinion does'nt count..get a belly
putter, that way you can shorten it every week..

^^^ is the correct answer.....

As i explained I was after some serious advice with a bit of a laugh thrown in for good measure given previous posts...

Hope I aint caused any offence its all tongue in cheek! :D

Our pro had an old Ping fitting putter with a telescopic shaft and pivoted hosel. You just set up how you felt comfortable and the shaft length and lie angle set themselves. Then he just read off the settings. Really simple.

First, find one that looks and feels right for you.

Try it out with the longer shaft and keep changing your grip position up and down the shaft (Ohh missis ) till you find where you are getting the best results. That should then be the ideal length for you.

Don't forget that the ideal set up position (so I'm told) is with your dominant eye directly over the ball. This may mean that you have to lean over it a bit which could mean needing a shorter shaft.

Go for the nearest length that suits and have that cut down if needed. I had a Ping PAL putter shortened by about 3" and it messed up the balance.

HTH

What do u ladies think?

I think a proper pro would have a better idea of what length of putter would suit someone without a full custom fit session.

The average "fit" my pro does seems to be 33 or 34. This means he either has to cut down existing putters in the shop or order custom spec from the manufacturers.
Either way, it makes the standard 35" AG selection fairly pointless.
