played em both last year stayed on site in the dorma rooms at aberdovey which were very nice and a good breakfast in the morning, not a great deal to do in aberdovey on a night think there was 3 pubs, course was ok some nice holes sheep roam wild and there sheep poo everywer, the full summer green fee is abit to much at £65,its looks better on the website than it does in real life, royal st davids, is very good couldnt knock the place, the last 4 or 5 holes really tough and tight, you will enjoy it, its a fair drive from aberdovey to st daivids and a tricky costal road, porthmadog and nefyn are better than aberdovey and closer togeather IMO,

I've not played either of them but played nefyn and I can't recommend it enough, its fantastic.

The old course back 8 are superb and a must play IMO.

Al I have played them both a couple of years ago. Aberdovey is an old fashioned links course that is quite flat but still a great challange. When i played it we had light winds and bright sunshine so we got away with it a bit.
The next day we drove down to Royal St Davids which is another great links, this time the wind did blow and how, along with the rain. At both clubs we were made to feel very welcome in the club house, pro shop and on the course's. You wont be disappointed with either course, we played at Aberdovey first then drove back .about halfway to R.S.D and stayed in a local B&B.

Played both of them a couple of years ago on our annual Scottish trip (I know, I know, don't ask). I think Aberdovey is a great place, a good links. A bit benign when we were there , but give it a bit of a breeze and its a good test. Yes there are occasionally sheep on it but so what - 'swot golf's about. RSD was not quite what I expected. The first part was quite flat (ish) but stiff. But the second part was truly what one thought it would be - monstrous dunes, blind shots and a better place to lose a golf ball is hard to come by. Gawd help you if the wind blows. If you like links, you enjoy both.

I played aberdovey in 2007, it was the 1st links course that I played…

I lost 12 balls, lost count of my card, and have loved links golf ever since!

Fantastic!

Played Aberdovey last year and stayed at the Britannia Inn. Wind blew an absolute hooley. The golf course was fantastic as was the food and room at the Brit. Really friendly locals.

Interesting point was when you park your car at the golf club, you then have to literally walk across the railway line to get to the course.

I have played Royal St Davids many many times and you will really enjoy it, its a great test of golf. Never played Aberdovey but a good friend is a member and always tells me how good it is and he is a member of Royal Liverpool so I think a decent judge.

Both courses were featured in our Golfer's Guide section in our January issue following a visit to the area in October.

We actually shot some video while there which was released with our iPad edition, but I've just put it up on YouTube too so you can take a look and see what we made of both these great courses.

We also visited Borth & Ynyslas and Aberystwyth while there for which we made a separate video, which I will upload in a minute and post the link in this thread

I've played both Aberdovey and Royal St davids though it was a long time ago now. I enjoyed them both and would say you wouldn't be unhappy if you went ahead and played them both. I think I preferred Royal St Davids as I remember a little more about the course.

I've also played Borth which is a quaint little course. I liked the sign on the second which read something like 'Don't tee off whilst traffic is oncoming', you have the sea on 1 side and a road going through the course on the other. Not the longest hole, but an intersting enough drive with a 40 yard wind. According to the locals if you tee off at the wrong time of day you get 9 holes of headwind going out and then it switches and you 9 holes of headwind coming back in.

Another sign I saw at a different course in Wales was quite direct and read something like 'if you've lost a hole stop and let the group behind through now'. I like that approach to slow play.

Nefyn is great (old course)9/10, very very hard if windy, but still worth it.
Royal St. Davids is also very good, but you can't see the sea. 8.5/10
Porthmadog is good 7/10

My advice is play Llanymynech (near Oswestry) on the way down or on the way back.
