...somewhere!

Played Leeds Golf Club (Cobble Hall) last night, got to the 1st tee, no time to warm up.

1st is 418 par 4 so thought I would play safe with and iron off the tee. 30 yards later I creamed a 5 wood down the middle of the fairway.

First five holes were poor even by my standards. Then over the next six holes I had par putts on each from varying distance and the worst score over the six was a double.

Then the driver developed a nasty slice and the next three holes were all three off the tee.

A couple more bogies down 17 and 18 cheared me up again and gave me hope for next time but it was another round in three figures.

I know I can play the game, but don't think I can improve until I can play more regularly and more improtantly get to the range more.

There is a mid handicapper in me somewhere!!!

I think the worse thing about teeing off with no warm up is the fact that you have no chance to find your tempo for the round. If you've rushed you might swing faster than you would do normally as that is the state your body is in.

It sounds as though you might be wanting it too much and so trying too hard and soif you have a bad hole you go chasing a good score to compensate. It also sounds like there may be a small technical issue with your driver and a quick lesson with your PGA pro may have you finding more fairways and therefore able to go for more greens

Stick with it. I know the irritation of knowing a good round is inside and the frustration of waiting for it to burst out. It will come. Keep the faith, get the swing checked and try not to put too much pressure on

Stick with it, you had a run of good holes so focus on that. Warming up for even 10 minutes makes a massive difference, don't even worry where the balls going when warming up, just get loose and in a nice rhythm.

Lessons will definitely help, it could be something really simple holding you back

Nice course Cobble, in fact holds the oldest Golf comp in the world which is The Leeds Cup.

Nevermind fella, we all sometimes play like that. I played Forest Park the other week and hooked two straight OOB on the first!!

Time is my greatest adversary. I know that inside me, somewhere, is a decent player, but lack of opportunity to play means that that potential will probably never manifest itself in low scores. Still, I see players over sixty in tournaments striking the ball well and contending and that gives me hope.

I always think good elderly players are examples to younger players. It can show how accuracy is more important than just hitting it further.

chill out, think of the positives and swing easy...

as soon as i stopped trying too hard i got better. this doesn't mean that you stop trying, just don't have too much going on in your head.

First response and Homer hits the nail on the head!!

I started this year and kept my head clear and just let happen what happened. I then had a couple of good round, a 102 and a 104 and since then it's gone south!!!

I'm keen to get a lesson sooner rather than later but as of tomorrow I am off coving school hols so little chance of seeing the clubs for a while!

Still, a break could do me good.

Some very good points in the responses, I'll be taking them on board.

Slow and steady wins the race. I'm going to stick a picture of a tortoise on my bag!!!

Spoff, I know the feeling, it seems like two steps forward and three steps back sometimes. I'm a 26 h/c and I am trying out on a trial period this Scoresaver thing, and it has me on its stats as FIR, GIR, Sand Saves and putting as between a 12 and 19 handicapper. But also tells me I am a 28+ player with my penalty shots. Anything from 3 to even 7 penalty shot per round are killing me.

About 6 weeks ago I scored 27 points in 10 holes, in the middle part of the round. The other 8 holes gave me 6 points for a total of 33, its so frustrating. But hang on in there, patience and determination I believe are the key, and of course a tortoise.

Dunno about that, my course claims to have that bragging right.

Pride of place in the Royal Musselburgh is the Old Club Cup dating back to 1774, the oldest trophy still competitively played for in the world.

well...

Commonly known as Cobble Hall, Leeds Golf Club is an 18-hole parkland course situated on the north side of Leeds. Founded in 1896 it was the original home of the oldest trophy in professional golf - the Leeds Cup - holders of which range from Harry Vardon to Howard Clark.

professional I may add ;)

How did you find forest park parmo? I forgot to ask!

This is the same trouble I've been having. Made good progress early in the year and broke 90 a couple of times, then things have been on the slide ever since.

Resulting in a 100 and a 105 at the weekend. And the 105 was a 'lucky' 105 could easily been 110+

I had a long hard think and went out for 9 holes Monday evening after work and just really took my time. Thought about each shot careful rather than "Where's the flag, now hit the ball" type golf I've declined into.

My driving was still off but I played good steady golf. I just slowed my swing down, focused on good ball contact. Surprisingly I didn't cost me much distance at all.

I think the big change I made is if I didn't feel comfortable with a shot, say a long 3-wood 2nd shot on a par 5, I'd just swap to my 6 or 7 iron, hit a nice steady shot. Keep it safe.

I just played good safe golf, nothing spectacular, just steady. I think I had a putt for par on most holes.

Shot 46 for 9 holes. And that was with a duffed bunker shot on 9, followed by a nice flop out to 2ft, then missed the 2ft putt.

I had a range session last night with the driver and I think I've sorted it out. I'm out again later today for another 9. We'll see if more of the same works.
