Had he not done so, he would have had to DQ himself (as well) for 'agreeing to waive a Rule of Golf'! So he was on a loser anyway!

It was SL's Brain Fart that caused it!
 
Realy only met him at the seve trophy over here , came across verrrrrrry badly IMO

Fact it was in Ireland and he didnt choose an Irish player as a wild card backfired ,, very badly supported

Don't think it was so much the penalty but more the way Faldo raised it. The tape was applied on the 2nd hole and Faldo could have informed Sandy that applying the tape was a breech and avoid him incurring any penalty by allowing it to be removed before a stroke was made with it. Instead he had a word with an official on the 9th. Bad form.

That's why it was in quotes!

But imo, Yes (in Strokeplay)! No different to seeing someone 'leather wedge' one, tap down a spike mark or brush sand off the the fringe. It's a 'Sorry, I can't sign your card' situation and when the reason comes out....

Could he have legally advised Sandy that he would be breaking the rules by putting the tape on.?????.
 
I wasn't a fan of Faldo, largely for the reasons some have given here about him being aloof - but then again I've never met him and I have met enough sportsmen to know that the public's perception of famous people is usually very different from real life, so if I ever met him I'd judge him by how he was to me not any previous prejudices.

I did however marshall at the Open at St Andrews one year and his gallery as they came past the 16th where I was working were probably the most ignorant bunch of golf fans I've ever seen.

I don't believe so, but depends on circumstances in current rules. As soon as you mention the word 'advice' it skews the answer towards 'No'! But unsure how that area was applied back then - AtticusFinch might be better placed to comment.

I doubt much conversation happened anyway. My understanding is that they were/are at opposite extremes in the thinking areas!

True, but it still depends on the circumstances/conversation.

Telling your FC the options for an unplayable, when (s)he asks, is certainly within the Rules. But saying 'That's unplayable; 2 Club lengths and back in line with the pin don't help so go back to the Tee' is certainly a breach!

I'm certain if SL had considered (that it might be a breach of) the Rules, he wouldn't have done it - though the way I've seen Woosnam take the mick out of SL, maybe he still would have! :rolleyes:

I don't consider there to be any 'blame' on SNF's part. I believe he acted precisely as he should have - bringing it to a RO's attention on behalf of the rest of the field.

I don't agree. If SNF had seen SL put the tape on and said " you can't do that, it's against the rules" that would not be a breach because, by definition, "advice about the rules" is not advice.

Well, in those circumstances, you'd be correct. I could provide a set of circumstances where it would most certainly be a breach!

As I posted - it all depends on the circumstances (and any conversation)

He was definitely a Porsche guy the couple of times I encountered him.

And pretty devoted to his kids too - if not their mothers :rolleyes:

I believe another of his women was pretty handy with a 7-iron - on the Porsche!

Seems to be the 'go to' club for that sort of thing!

I never thought he was a good choice as Ryder Cup Captain - and it's not a role I'd see Sandy Lyle performing well at either. Nothing to do with their golfing qualities though.
