Hi All.
I've been set a Project to amend the current Ordnance Surveys to make them more usable for Golfers.

As part of my research, I wanted to ask firstly, If any of you (in the UK) Use the Ordnance Survey Maps? Anything Missing?

And Lastly if you were going to play golf in an unfamiliar area what information would you find useful?

Thanks in advance.

The green fee?? and do they serve all day breakfast?? ;)

Welcome to the forum ThePuttPirate, would you care to tell us a little about yourself please?

I've never needed a map to find a course or play golf.

If I need a map, I'm out on my feet or MTB.

I use a Strokesaver when I play a new course.

None of the above mate. Lost of people will use GPS when playing courses old or new. TBH with you I have never heard of a single person using an Ordanace Survey in relation to playing golf.

The way I'm playing at the moment it could be an idea. It might help me find the course again from where ever I have hit my ball.

PuttPirate I think you need to give us more info on what you have in mind.

I'm assuming you're looking at golfers who use OS maps to find a golf course rather than their way round one (although sometimes it's the same thing):D

I use OS maps and used one yesterday to find a course (not to play just to pop in on my way somewhere else)

Not sure how you'd include much info on a standard printed map. Are you thinking of maybe offering special maps for golfers?

I'm also assuming this isn't just about the printed maps but some online stuff so when you put the cursor over a course on an online map you'd get some info about it.

In that case I'd find it useful to know

9 or 18 holes
Private or pay and play
Length, Par and SSS
Date founded
Visitor info (green fees, restricted tee times etc)
Club house and pro shop info (is there one, opening times, food, bar etc)
Course type (heathland, parkland, links etc., or maybe hilly, easy walking, etc)
Link to the course web site.

Is that the kind of thing you're after?

Thanks for the quick responses.

What im trying to get at is what you'd actually like to find out if you were planning a journey to a golf course. This could be from anything you'd find interesting to know about the course itself to whats around it.
No. I'm not talking about plotting a a map of a course.

My project is on maps, yes those ancient things. And weather your using a more revolutionary version (e.g GPS) it'd still be helpful to know. Thanks.

I would want to know how many holes, 9 or 18+ and what the yardage of the corse is.

I personally wouldnt use a paper map at all

i would go online and either use Multimap or Google maps.

Or I would already know the name of the course and use its own website.

so unless you are planning an online map I wouldnt bother

Fragger

Sorry but I would't use a paper map. I'd use google mpas or the clubs website to get a look at the holes and general layout and rely on the GPS for the sat nav to get there and for my skycaddy for my yardages. I don't think many people travelling to and from a golf course are overly interested in the route other than it being the fastest or most direct and that they make their tee time or the bacon butties don't get scoffed

I sympathise with your plight, many people are turning away from maps, as a youth I loved nothing more than plotting my way around the north of our mainland (scotland, cumbria, the peak district) with just a trusty OS map, compass and other walking essentials.

I think golfers are not much different from other map users, there is nothing we specifically need that we cannot get off the clubs website, the course yardage book or from the pro shop.

Maps are very important for those out hill walking, the battery can never run out, the software can never fail and having that reliability can save your life.

No problem, this is still very helpful if you dont use maps, means my project will have to take a change in direction anyway, something more digital.

However, GPS is still a kind of map and I'd like to know what you guys would like to find out if you were going to play on a course, even if its off the internet etc. Sorry to repeat i cant edit my first post now.

For golfers we again do not differ much from other tourists, in the local area of a course we need to know of things like:

Hotels
Camp sites
Places to eat/ buy food
Petrol stations
Places of interest

What golfers would need:

Course details- Pro shop? Practice facilities?
Golf shops in the local area with details ie Net, range, swing analyser?
Driving Ranges
Golf academies
Custom Fitting
Any others guys?

I know its difficult but perhaps some sort of rating system, so you know whether its a goat track or a decent course, perhaps you could mark the Golf Monthly top 100 ratings or similar
