A question for fitness experts ........................ before I burst!

The situation is quite straightforward. I've recently undergone shoulder surgery and have therefore spent a few weeks sitting around at home with my arm in a sling. I've basically just sat around drinking tea and, because I'm quitting smoking, eaten several pounds of chocolate and many packets of shortbread biscuits .................. mmmmmmmmmmmmm.
My gym subscription is on hold until I can use my arm again, which will probably next month for the running or cycling machines. Weights & rowing machines are out of the equation until at least July.
What I need to know is this, what is the best way to get rid of the ugly spare tyre that has welded itself to my waist.
It's a bit like wearing one of these

around your waist!

Do I cycle, do I run or is there something else I should be doing bearing in mind I MUST NOT use my arm in any way at the moment.

Whats to stop you going for walks around town rather than sitting all day?

Treadmill, step machine, cross trainer @ the gym. Plenty things you can do without an arm.
 
Without sounding rude..... stop eating so much.

I know it's hard not to snack when you are bored as i do it also, have a bottle of water with you and when you start feeling hungry have a drink of water instead.

If you do need to snack on something have fruit or some nuts.

As for exercise go for a few brisk walks, a couple of miles a day will make a change.
 
Use your other arm to put down the chocs and shortbread.

Cycling might be your best bet, especially recumbent cycling where you will lean less on the arm. Running probably involves too much arm action (if you do it right).
 
In the end it comes down to calories in versus calories out. So in simple terms you need to eat less and move more. The belly may not be the first to reduce but it will in time.

Brisk walking would be fine as would cross trainer, static bike and any cv machine that you can protect your shoulder on but burn calories. You could also do some resistance work on your lower body such as squats and lunges plus core and abs work (plank, crunches etc).

Many people gain some weight when giving up the ciggies and it's compounded for you with the shoulder problem. The main thing is kicking the ciggies so go easy on yourself and don't beat yourself up too much. Once they are truly consigned to history then you can really kick on with a healthy diet and exercise regime.
 
Without exercise getting shot of the spare tyre is going to be hard, eat raw veg and fruit instead or choccy and shortbread, nuts are good for you brazil nuts especially, you could also try pumpkin seeds.

A brisk walk will do you no harm and if your mates are going for a round you could always walk with them, help look for lost balls, tend the flag, rake bunkers etc. while having a bit craic.

No more chocolate .................... no, slightly less chocolate I can manage.
Ridiculously cut down on shortbread ........ that's do-able.
Next quessie. This is a calorie burn question.
Which burns more calories, a brisk 2 hour walk or a miserable ½ hour jog? I only say miserable as I've NEVER seen a jogger looking happy. They don't even acknowledge me when I say 'hello'.

P.S. I'm the world's fussiest eater. I can't do nuts, seeds, salads, muesli, health bars etc.
I can do apples, oranges, cauliflower & sprouts ............... they're my healthy foods.
I'm just not normal!
 
Feel your pain . . . . its hard, but while your not exercising cut down on the sugar and the carbs. Have wholemeal pasta and rice as opposed to the normal 'white' stuff. Eat sweet potato instead of normal spuds, and try and get out for a 30 min brisk walk each day.

Brisk walking would do the job, but it's a time thing. I gave up cycling, as bang for buck, running gets me fit quicker. 3 hours on a bike, 1 hour running.

If I'm fit, I quite like running. It's the getting fit that I hate.
 
I don't know how much chocolate/shortbread you eat but your version of "cutting down on them" you could still be eating too much of them, especially if you are doing little exercise.

You have quit smoking so you have the willpower so try giving up chocolate/shortbread?
 
If exercise if off the agenda cut complex carbs from your diet and foods higher in protein. Excessive carbs turn to fat that gets stored and creates that spare tyre effect, also cut eating after 7pm out as the metabolism slows by then.

If you like chocolate that's no bad thing but switch to dark choc e.g Bourneville as it has less dairy in it and less of the extras they chuck in milk chocolate.

Then get out walking somewhere that there's hills to add resistance and work the heart rate with placing stress on the arm

An early night ;) burns off more calories than jogging, and if you include the time taken chashing HID around the house you'll have burned off more calories than going for just the jog.

It was a typo indeed.

As for it all being myths sorry just because a website says its a myth as they researched it I'll take more convincing. The re as on being there's equal research been done to show it is t a myth also by medical and health sites. There's also plenty of living people to show that it works.

Give or take the calories burnt per mile are the same regardless of how fast you cover it in. Running it elevates your heart rate which is beneficial and burns a few more calories after the event but overall the brisk walk will be excellent and no point heading towards something you don't enjoy as you'll never stick to it.
