So you buy a Dell in the hope it goes tits up because they have good backup?

I don't think so. You spend ur cash on the best spec you can afford.

No, you buy a Dell because you like the brand and have confidence that should it go tats up, it will get fixed without having to answer 100 questions and turn it on and off and on and off.
Been in computers 18 years this year and have repaired laptops for each and every one of them. HP and Dell are the most reliable. IBM/Lenovo arnt bad, very well put together but have some weak internals occasionally.

All laptops share common components like hard drives, screens, keyboards etc. It really does come down to support .....and brand loyalty.

You are totally right there, take any non pc literate person into pcworld and give them the choice of a poor, good and great laptop all at the same price and they will buy whatever the sales rep advises them, btw pcworld is as bad as American Golf when it comes to pushing poor kit.

im on my 3rd dell power brick for my xps m1710
its a delib manurfacturing fault as the little fillament wires on the plug into the laptop break, it tell you theres not enough power and cant charge and to buy a new power supply
and at £30 odd a time arent cheap (alot more if bought direct from dell)

dells laptops are ok, but dont say support are wonderful(they might be for business, tbh thats all dell care about) they just fobbed me off and have pretty much everyone with the same fault if you read feedback forums about the problem

brand loyalty, no when i went looking for another gaming laptop and dell/alienware was suggested by fellow Lan gaming community/forums members, if im spending £1600+ on a high end laptop i dont want to then have to be fighting a company when i get the same problem over and over

hence me now using my Asus G73

and surely if your repairing all those brands all the time they can't be all that great brendy :D lol

First of all a big thanks to everyone for your suggestions and help. Some of it has been way above me  Brendy gets a bit carried away sometimes. ;) :p

As my Daughter only needs a fairly basic set up, the consensus of opinion seems to be that Dell would be best suited to her needs.

Thanks again for all the help. :)
