Ok , could the members in the know explain in terms that I might have a chance of understanding what exactly a 'cat' player is e.g. cat4, cat 1 etc.?

I guess it's to do with standards of play but it's a buzz phrase that seems to crop up quite frequently.

If we could avoid quadratic equations and intergration it would help a lot.

Its all to do with handicaps when playing medal golf, a cat1 player gets cut .1 for every stroke under the css, cat 2 gets .2 off for every shot under the css, and so on up to cat 4.

Categories are used for handicapping purposes.

Cat 1 up to 5.4
Cat 2 5.5 to 12.4
Cat 3 12.5 to 20.4
Cat 4 20.5 to 28

Category 1 golfers get cut by 0.1 for each stroke under the CSS. Category 2 0.2, Category 3 0.3 and category 4 0.4.

Buffer zones are also different: Category 1 golfers only get a 1 stroke buffer above the CSS, Cat 2 get 2, cat 3 get 3 and so on.

The effect of this is that is is harder to obtain and maintain a lower handicap as the cuts are smaller but the potential for increase is greater.

Many clubs (my own included) tend to run 3 "classes" of players in medals which do not coincide with the handicapping categories.

e.g.
1st Class: up to 10.4
2nd Class: 11 to 16
3rd class: 17 or more.
