On sunday we were having a chat about how pro's approach their game and how their game differs from the standard club stuff.

* They dont carry a bag for 18 holes, in heat, in the cold, in the rain etc etc.

* if their making a bad shot choice, the caddy tried to set them straight before making the bad call.

* they have their own stroke saver, yet a caddies s/s will have additional notes, additional distances,

* They get mental advice from the caddie as well a other advice that may relate to a swing change their going through and so on..

* 2nd opinion on club choice, line of putt, the list is endless

is it any wonder they shoot these scores, what id love to see is a comp for pro's, where they have no caddy for the above listed advise/critique/2nd opinion, where they have to carry their clubs like everyone else and play based on their own judgement, that isnt influenced by someone who knows their game inside out. Id be interested to see how they scored in comparrison to a caddy assisted round.

While watching the golf yesturday you could hear the caddies all doing their bit which we know is what their paid for, but for me golf is about the sport as a solid unit.

The endurance of carrying your clubs or pushing your trolley. the mental endurance of making the right shot choices for the situation based on your own thoughts and not those of a caddy who is paid to learn your game inside out and advise when your about to make a mistake.

feel free to discuss.

i use a caddy when playing in away comps. and it does make a big difference not just carrying the bag but having a friendly voice giving advice and helping you focus and letting you concentrate on your game without the distraction of those around you.

Exactly, as a kid i caddied. I caddied for the same guy and knew hes game inside out, infact knew it that good it cost him a hole in one on captains day that he never let me live down, i would read putts, have clubs ready before he had even got to he's ball, and he 100% trusted me.

Now my point is he had me to bounce off, so had that second opinion or sometimes voice of reason. no doubt carrying a bag causes everyone to fatigue slightly towards the end of a round, to me this is part and parcel of the game.

I bet it would see the end of the dustbin tour bags.

Check out the Europro Tour, that vast majority sort their own gear out and are regularly in high teens under par for 54 holes.

The guys are just good, end of.

Yeah I have seen some events on the tv where the golfers are carrying or using a trolley. For example I am sure the u16 version of the ryder cup they all managed on there own with no caddy. Ask Jason on here what he uses and what people use on his tour. I think its only once you go so far up you have to use a caddy.

Pretty much sums up a Europro/Challenge Tour event. You can count on one hand the number of players on Europro who have a caddie week in week out and then it most likely would be a friend or relative.

These guys were just like us once upon a time. Most of them got to plus figures doing it the old fashoined way. I still think they would play well

I don't think oddsocks is saying they'll all of a sudden start hacking it around like us, just wondering whether the average score would go up if they played without their caddy - it's an interesting question

exactly my point Hawkeye, im not trying to discredit a pro in anyway shape or form. My point is they have a 2nd opinion on every shot, a voice of reason when biting off more than they can chew, if they start to lose their head someone to get them back on track, and they dont have to contend with carrying a bag and knackering themselves. its simular to F1 in some aspects, its not how fast a driver can drive, its also how good their opit crew is and how good their race engineer is.... that all builds into a successfull combo. I look on the same view with pro golf, woods may have been a dominant force in world golf, but he's caddie must have had some impact on that success also.

i would like to see some sort of charity event, where each pro had to play as us mere mortals do on a day to day basis.

Carry their own bag / use a trolley if they wish
standard course planner/gps or range finder
and their not allowed to discuss club choice etc.

it would be interesting to see which players lacked without their trusty caddy, and which ones excelled.

Yeah take tiger for instance, all the folk at side plus media etc watching him ready to choke again, you'd want a friend right next to you to help with the situation, end of day it's the golfer hitting the shot, I'm pretty sure if I had all the gear, the caddie, the conditions they play in I'd still shank it haha

im tempted to get a caddie for a round to see if it makes a blind bit of difference.

This all come about from my balls out shot on 16 yesturday, id been spanking the driver all round and i got to the 16th chasing a good card at +6, the tee was forward and the green was playing at about 265 according to the gps, i was looking at the shot trying to work out if i could go for the green, or atleast close to it. slight dogleg right, but off the forward tee the tree about 50 yards infront of the tee was in play, from the backs you can get a good bit og height on the ball by the time you get level with the tree, but off the front its different.

after discussion with paddy one and paddy two, i was told to take the shot on... ego-socks committs, tees up as far left of the blocks as he can to open up as much room as possible, feels good ... goes at it, catches one of the only branches of decent size on the tree, 90* right OBB in to the scout camp and i post a bloody 8.

Any caddy would not have let me take that shot on, lesson learned, never trust two paddys.

I would say taking away the caddie and other benefits wouldn't effect the winning score, but I do believe that a players average score over a season would be slightly higher.

Having a random caddie may not have helped, but an experienced one probably would have. Playing full time without a caddie and the costs involved, means you have to learn from your mistakes pretty quick.
