Playing at Bearwood Lakes yesterday, beautiful day, course in perfect condition. I was going along quite nicely after 7 holes. Had blobbed one (tricky par 3) but still had 15 points under my belt. Hitting the ball reasonably well.
Stood on the 8th tee, short par 4. Has never caused me problems in the past. Waiting for the green to clear I heard my mobile phone bleep a text message.
Now I don't normally carry my phone on the course, I always (always) leave it in the car, but because I had been held up in traffic yesterday and it was a bit rushed onto the tee I just slipped it in my bag.
Whilst we were waiting I just thought I'd read the message thinking it was a good luck text from the Missus.
No, it was my boss telling me that unfortunately due to family circumstances (his) I would have to work the two late night shifts this week. A bit cheesed off because I have things that I wanted to do on the two evenings involved, but he's the boss so I can't argue.
Proceeded to hook my tee shot into the lake on the left (which has never come into play for me before) and blob the hole, along with the next. Bugger. I was on for a 19 pointer and had to settle for 15....

So just a reminder to you all.....don't look at text messages whilst you are on the course. Especially if they say they are from "Paul Lindfield mobile" rather than "Sam mobile"

Gone back to work.

This topic raises a question: How important is a round of golf to you?

Is it more important than a message from family which bears bad news?

Is it more important than your job?

Does it depend on whether it is a club comp or fun round?

Why is important now and yet it wasn't before you had a phone?

Like Rob, I do not usually carry my phone on the course as I see it as bad ettiquette to answer a phone whilst playing and have been known to (jokingly) suggest a penalty to anyone who does answer/look at a phone on the course.

Thats why i always leave mine in the car Smiff.....
Its the only 4 hours i get to myself playing golf...Let all your troubles go for a bit :p

As I said in my first post, I normally leave my phone in the car. I can't remember the last time I took it out on the course with me, I hate the bloody things.
And although I had heard the text message bleep I doubt whether I would have even looked at my phone had we not been standing on the tee for a few minutes waiting for the fairway/green to clear.
I've been on golf courses before and played with people who have taken the afternoon off work but have still had their mobile phones switched on "in case anybody needs to get me from the office" and then stood watching as they receive endless calls. Really winds me up....
