Due to my frustration of the recent form of golf.. i decided to go to the range tonight with a old friend of mine who is a scratch golfer... he gave me a kind of lesson and he gave me the best tip i have ever had before he said

Dont hit the ball swing at the ball

Touch wood this seems to have worked as he explained the reason for the odd hook slice or shank is that we try to do stuff with the club during the swing making it impossible to get it back on line... after a few pointers such as stay relaxed and clear the head of thoughts that cause muscles to tense for example i gotta hit it massive... i managed to stay relaxed and better shots came!

Im not saying its the cure for any problems just really helped me! so thought id share it

Great advice, but I would change that to "swing through the ball" rather than "at the ball".

That's why the average amateur player's practice swing is better than his contact swing.

I think its a common tip but one that we all seem to forget from time to time. My coach often gets me to try and hit an 8 iron no more than 100 yards with a full swing which isn't as easy as it sounds. The point is when you then try and hit a full shot again, the tempo and more importantly the release through the ball is so much better. We all know that feeling we get when we swing within ourselves and see the ball go high, straight and true and yet on the next shot we go back to trying to belt it miles thinking its the way to repeat the previous shots with familiar consequences

It's quite a difficult thing for an amatuer to do I think. I so often take a few practice swings which feel fine, but as soon as I try to hit the ball I can feel my swing being tense or jerky and basically just rubbish, which is why I'm really inconsistent. But those times I do feel like I just swing through it like a practice swing, the ball goes straight and miles, and it's a great feeling.
