If you disagree, you can point out to him that he has the opportunity to play an alternative ball under the rules, but he must declare which ball he is going to score with, if allowed. If he refuses to do that, then you have to refer the matter to the committee when you return to the clubhouse. It's always a good idea to get another opinion from a fellow player. I wouldn't sign his card if I believed he was trying to take an unfair advantage.

you have to report the matter to the committee if he does invoke 3-3 as well........it's just that he would have a slightly different
outcome to a decision that he didn't act within the rules (depending on the competition format)
