OK this thread is meant to generate reaction but I am watching the USPGA and a stream of mid level. mid talent gofers compete. Every generation has a great sportsmen and the golfer of our generation has lost the plot so you would think that someone would be ready to step up and take the mantle but no, what we have is a top 100 of golfers who are as bland as each other and really nobody is excited enough about any of them to support any of them. what I hear is a stream of golfers who have qualified for the Ryder Cup by their number of top 10 finishes but no out right winners and this is pretty disheartening.

If the world number one spot is up for grabs you would think that someone could have enough control over their game and surroundings to take it but clearly not.

I am not a Tiger fan but there realy is nobody with the guts to take his place.

Sorry these are the views of a very drunk golfer

I am waiting for Rory Mc to achieve his potential. That will sort out your issues.

No issues and would love to see Rory reach the number 1 spot but now is his chance as with everyone who has lived in the shadow of Tiger but nobbody seems to be able to take the opportunity that has been given to them. Every previous generation has had 2 or 3 greats and if one failed then someone else was willing to take their spot. What do we have now, a generation willing to live on top 10 finishes and, Mickleson aside, nobody else who can be or wants to challenge to be number 1.

I have watched some repeats of Niklaus, Player etc going on tour to play each other. Is there anyone you would pay to see challenge Tiger on a one off round (this being Tiger before he lost the plot)

Team/individual GB are sh!te at winning anything!

They couldn't even beat the French for bronze at swimming today.

They can't pass batons. in running relays.

They can't hold it together coming down the straight on Sundays.

They're a lost cause.

The only truly British person I'm truly proud of is Phil 'The Power' Taylor!

As much of a McIlroy fan as i am i dont think that he has the same imagination and drive that woods has.....I know his putting is getting better but its still nowhere near Tigers level......And im not a Tiger fan before anyone asks.

At the moment and on current form i would put Kaymer above McIlroy in my list...I think that he's a much more complete player at the moment......

I think it's setting uo nicely for Sunday, one person way in front like Oosthuizen at St Andrews makes for dull viewing.
Mid level, mid talent - get real!
There are thousands of low amateurs and wannabee pros playing all kinds of tours in every country trying their guts out to reach where these guys are at Whistling Straits.
The way the courses are set up for them in Majors is so tough that getting under par is brilliant golf. Many of these guys are well below that.
Just because one guy isn't out in front doesn't say anything other than there are many top pros around.
You or me couldn't break 100 at a place like that, from the tees they play it anyway.

GB72....God bless white wine(2 bottles ,,,,,so far!)

JIMBO
:o

Oh how I wish it were just the white wine but I started on the Normandy cider, moved on to the Sincere white but there is a very nice Sincere Rose as well then it was the Banyuls with the cheese then on to Calvados and finally on to the single malt. I have parents who are a bit francophile so if I go round there for a meal then it really is a meal.

I agree that one guy out in front would be boring but where are the greats playing week in, week out inspirational golf. When I grew up there was Seve, Faldo, Woosnam, Lyle and before that there was Niclaus, Player, Palmer. Can you tell me that any one, possibly aside from Mickleson, Els or Singh is anywhere near as inspirational. Just get the feeling that everyone is treading water until Woods gets his game back and very few are willing to stand up and say that they are better and that the number one spot is theirs.

If there were 2 or 3 players that were consistently ahead of the rest we'd have a "There is no strength in depth" thread.

How's that for argumentative ;)

Everyone, upon reaching a certain age, starts to look back with rose tinted glasses, that their generation were somehow the best.
There are far more better pros now, they don't stand out because the competition is fiercer and there aren't gulfs in class between them.
For what it's worth I don't think Tiger will be back as he once was, he may manage a Major here or there but he is not going to dominate like he did. He will just be one of a large pack of great players.
Golf is really a world game now, winning names are going to pop up from everywhere.

I probably agree, Tiger may not be back but, as I said earlier, I am not necessarily a Tiger fan and am not looking for him to come back as number 1 but sports in general attract attention when there are people who are seen as true greats and ideally when there are 2 or 3 competing. Federer and Nadal make good viewing as did McEnroe and Borg before them. Bolt has brought athletics back to the public eye and Thorpe did the same for swimming and Taylor has done the same for darts. Sports need a couple of big name players who stand out from the crowd to gain big support and watching the golf over the last few weeks has made me feel that there are few who, when compared to the rest of the field, are above the ordinary

Let's say for arguments sake that Rory Mc had teed it up with Oosthuizen in the 2nd round at St Andrews. He'd have strolled to the open title. He's in contention at the USPGA. He hit that wonderful 62 to win at Quail Hollow and he's on the front cover of the new EA Sports Golf Game.

If he'd played with Oosthuizen that morning we'd be talking about Rory Mc 2012 on playstation and the successor to Tiger Woods on the tour. But he didn't he teed it up in a gale and had a mare and I think he's a better golfer for it.

You know who I feel sorry for? Lee 'Montgomerie' Westwood who now has the young Northern Irishman to contend with in the majors.

PS sounds like you had a great dinner!
