Achilles
Challenge Tour Pro
Apologies in advance for this post but I want to share!
I joined my new club on Wednesday and suffice to say was as keen as mustard to get out on the course as soon as possible. However as I wanted to get home in time for the footy I only played the first 3 holes before heading back to Casa Achilles, with the plan of playing a full round tonight.
Managed to escape work early and started with a warm up on the range with things feeling good, so moved onto the first tee. Proceeded to cream a drive right up the middle but only when I got close did I realise I found the bunker blocking the green. Some atrocious shots later (including 3 putts) I was marking an 8 on my card and cursing the Gods for getting my hopes up of something resembling a good score.
However, that seemed to kick start me as I then went on to play some the finest golf I can remember playing. I was 2 over for the next 5 holes and had a wobbly few holes after that but the back 9 was, by my standards, great. I managed a birdie on the par 5 12th with a chip-in from off the side of the green, parred the next and bogeyed the 14th leaving me 2 over for the first 5 holes of the back loop (14 points)
Then the Gods decided to spoil my fun
I'd noticed the light going thanks to some very dark clouds coming towards me but thought I had a while before any rain. Having thought I'd seen a flash of lightning earlier I stood watching and was scared sh!tless by a massive bolt of fork lightning. Never before have I been so eager to get off the course! Managed to get back to the car just before this funny wet stuff started falling from the sky!
Two things I did learn tonight though are that my 52* Vokey is a lifesaver. Having only had a week or so it saved me on so many occasions and is fast becoming my favourite club, especially around the greens. The second thing is that I need a bunker lesson ASAP. I was pathetic. Embarassing. I cannot expect to progress without some help as tonight it cost me far too many shots
Still, an encouraging night and I have a good feeling about this year. Just as long as the Gods let me get on with things!!
