A 2-iron experiment

The rough's been up at my home course this year and my driving hasn't been good most of the year anyway. Result. Lots of scores in the mid 80's.

So, in the spirit of Tiger Woods, my next round will be played with the driver in my car boot and nothing more than a 2-iron (my favourite club) off the tee. Has anyone tried this before? Favourable results?

Have often thought about it John (especially recently)but almost every par 4 I play is over 400yds usually into a gale, so I'm afraid I need the length.
If I could leave myself with less than 160/170 to go using a 2 iron then I would go for it, but unfortunately I can't so there it is.

Update us on your results I think they might be quite interesting.

I did have to use the 2-iron off the tee a lot at Carnoustie because I had a doze of the blocks with the driver...but, as you say, it does leave a LOT of long shots into the greens.

That would be ok if the short game's up to scrambling the pars when you miss them but I'm afraid I'm not that man. Will be interesting around my home turf though where there are only 9 par 4's, mostly just short of 400 yards.

I think it'll be interesting not to be tempted to hit the driver at all.

John_Findlay,

Slightly off thread here but, I've been looking at the Mizuno's myself but am not so sure. How easy are they to hit? Does the wide sole help a lot?

I've got a set of MP30s and cant consistently stike the 3 or 4 irons so these would seem a good replacement.

cheers

Hi DCB.

I have the MP 30 irons too but was inconsistent with the 3 and 4 irons. You really have to nail them off the sweet spot. Great when it works, but...

The Hi-Fli irons are superb. Great driving irons off the tee, as you can hit high or low, but the difference for me is that they are great off even tight turf or light rough. I love them. They are very forgiving. Great clubs in the wind. I have taken my 3 wood out of my bag and use the 2-iron instead as I can drill it through the breeze.

I see you are in my area. I got them from Nevada Bob's in Edinburgh, where you can try them out for feel. Let me know how you get on.

Cheers

I had my irons custom fitted at MIzuno's fitting centre and I absolutely love them, because they feel so sweet off the club face.

However, the -iron looked the scariest thing I have ever seen, the head looked tiny on the end of the shaft and i struggled with it, although I am thinking of trying it again. The Fli-Hi I hit went well but the head just didnt suit my eye as I like a thin club head to look down on, but the CLK (i think) hybrid they have was really good and I almost got one of them as it just flies and feels so solid.

I got them in March and im still undecided as to what club to get between my 3-iron and 3-wood. Any advice is appreciated?

I'm much the same, Sparrow. I do need something between my 2-iron and my driver, off the deck particularly.

My existing utility club is a Taylormade Mid Rescue with 19 degrees of loft and whilst it will go higher than my 2-iron it won't go as far. Also, the shaft is wrong for me. So I've booked a custom fit session with the Titleist boys to find either a fairway metal or a strong utility with the right shaft which will fit the bill.

Picked up a MP flihi 4 iron today. Hopefully the rain will go off and I can get out and give it a try before the weekend.

Tried out my new MP Fli Hi 4 Iron this morning. Absolutely fantastic! It is so much easier to hit than the standard MP30 4 iron. Nice flight and good distance, maybe even a wee trip back to get the 3 iron is required!

Yes, could be good. Pretty standard practice in the summer on short-ish courses. If you can hit it well, go for it.

I posted some mid 70s at my home club, but it's short-ish (6700) without a driver. You may have to accept not going for one or two of the long holes. They (1 and 2 I's) are great when they're going well, maybe even more satisfying than a wood. So straight and so low!!!
