So...on our 9 hole course..we go round twice for the full 18....I was told that I can not practise a putt after the hole had completed on the front 9 as we would play it again on the back......can someone please link me to the rules on this.....as an aside we have a different 8th hole and 17th...both pars 3's...so assume I could practise my putt on the 8th, as I would not play it again.........all tees are the same on the back 9.

Thanks,

M

When playing a 9 hole course twice to make an 18 hole round, the holes are considered different holes in your second half. You can practise putting between any holes provided there is no Local Rule prohibiting it.

Start with 5.1 which tells you that a round is 18 holes or fewer played in the sequence determined by the committee. Then go to 5.5.b which permits chipping or putting on or near the green last played during the round . If a 9 hole course Committee defines a particular round as 18 holes using the same 9 hole course twice, that is a single entity to which 5.5b applies.

My home course is a nine holer, has a local rule preventing practise putting on the greens, I cannot remember the exact wording but it does apply to 'all 18' greens.

5.2b/2 in the full rules specifically mentions practising putting being allowed on a green which will be played again on the second 9.

here is the approved Local Rule
Rule 5.5b is modified in this way: Between the play of two holes, a player must not:
  • Make any practice stroke on or near the putting green of the hole just completed, or
  • Test the surface of that putting green by rubbing the putting green or rolling a ball.

Thanks Rulefan, pretty sure that is how it is worded, I didn't want to miss quote it.
