I read on the BBC golf site that Rory Mcilroy is to undergo a scan on his back which is giving him a bit of jip following numerous 8 hour practice sessions. Flipping heck I'm not surprised.Even at his young age surely that is too much practice and can only lead to a permanent problem in the future.

8 Hours isn't a problem unless its with a driver!!

I've done it myself a few times and wasn't a problem. Considering that the idea of that type of practise is to hit shots with full pre shot routines and lots of short game I wouldn't think it should do too much damage unless he is hitting lots at full power.

Maybe there is someother reason for his back problems.

So jealous of that dedication though.

As said, it probably won't all be full shots. Judging by his play over the weekend, he has spent a lot of time practicing his putting.

Surely it can't be good for these guys to hit for that long. What about quality over quantity. OK I grant that they don't have the same flaws to correct as many of us do and even if it was 8 hours on the short game it can't do any good and must be tiring mentally as well as physically.

Singh and Faldo before were just machines and would hit as many balls as daylight allowed. Their results seem to prove their approach was right but apart from them I can't think of anyone who has benefitted from hitting as many balls per day or practicing for so long. Even Woods mixes practice up with gym work and rest periods

Would be surprised if that was 8 hours of solidly hitting golf balls. Could be couple of hours of putting, discussing things with his coach, watching his swing on a monitor etc.

I couldn't practice for anything like that long - about an hour and I've had enough. I'd rather play.

It does seem strange to be spending that much time in one session. No surprise he's got a sore back.

I could practice all day, everyday. Just give me a new body, this one's worn out.

Oh yeh, a few million quid in the bank wouldn't hurt either.

Last eight hour session I did was at a stag doo. It only took me about 3 weeks to recover, however by my own admission I'm a shandy drinking poof!

I hit balls for 3.5 hours the other day (worked through my entire kit) and was sore as hell the next day. 8 hours would put me in a stretcher.
