yesterday i was purchasing some new golf clubs, i got the wilson staff Di7 and a taylormade 3 wood. at the counter while paying i made the comment that i would have to start saving up for the 5 wood. when the salesman said that i might be better off with a rescue.

I know that i will have to see what the yardage difference is between the 4 iron and the 3 wood first so that i have a better idea but i just want to know peoples opinions on this?

I carry both a 5wood and rescue, both go roughly the same distance but my rescue club has a higher trajectory so lands softer. My 5 wood flies lower and will generally roll about 20yds before stopping.

If i'm hitting in to the wind the 5 wood comes out every time.

Hi deniel
I also have the Di7's and plumbed for a 20* cobra utility instead of a 3 iron. Also have a TM R9 4 wood instead of a 3&5 wood, This was so i could have the Di7 gap wedge which fills the gap between the sand wedge and pitching wedge which is quite signfificant

i noticed that the pitching wedge didnt seem to have much of a loft compared to my old clubs. i have a gap and lob wedge so im ok there

Exacly the same! Glad somebody else does this as some of my golfing buddies say that i am wasting a club by carrying 2 similar!

just check out the distances at the range because the p wedge is strong like a lot of modern sets of irons ( makes you think you are hitting it longer) I had a mizuno wedge for the gap but it never worked out and I would have had to buy a whole set of wedges to get it sorted. The G wedge fits perfectly as it's from the same set of clubs, same feel weight etc when hitting a full shot. My 60* mizuno wedge is just for bunker shots. Just the way I found it hope it helps.

I chose a rescue - 19* - seems to be midway between my 3 wood & 4 iron.

I like the rescue as it's more versatile. If you're in the rough you can grip down and use it for shorter shots. Chip with it, stops well on greens and is good from fairway and tee.

But that's just my personal preference.

well my previous set had two rescue clubs and i did find them a pleasure to used and yes they are more versatile. i havent had chance to get them to the range yet, only bought them last night but by sunday i will have a better idea.

jeffc, where did you get the gap wedge from?

Got it from ebay, check the link below, £32 plus p&p, see what I mean, to buy a set of wedges would of cost me more than the set of irons,no brainer really plus as I said all the irons have the same feeling.
Manufacturers now make wedges less lofted giving people the feeling that they are hitting it miles. The Di7 p wedge is 46* the gap 49* and the sand wedge 55* so I use them from about 130 yards in down to 90 yards accordingly.
It's up to the individual but I'm more than satisfied with the set up.

Hope it helps

currently I'm carrying a 3-wood, 4-h and 4-iron (the 3-wood is on trial)

I have one or two holes where a 4-i off the tee seems the best bet but hitting if off the deck is risky. off the deck the 4-h has been flying at times, it's getting me close to making the green in two off our straight par 5 and longer par 4's.

my 3-h is consigned to the boot at the moment, worked fine when I bought it but ever since . . .
and for some reason my 5-wood doesn't work either.

I'm with minty and mattyb0y and carry a 3 hybrid and a 5 wood. I only drop the 5 wood if I swap wedges and carry a 52, 56 and a 60 (only if a course has deep bunkers or very heavy greenside rough). I find I can get my hybrid out to about 190 yards but with a higher flight and can eek a 5 wood to about 200-205 with a draw and its lower flight so I do get a bit of variety.

rescue every time - 3 wood for fairway, rescue (19 or 21 degree) for rough and softer landing. I carry a 3 and rescue and have come down from 8 to 6 this year on the basis of my new found ability to 'get round the green' with a rescue from rough
