Sunday is our club's 5 club competition. I've not played in one before and have been trying to think about what clubs to take.

It's played off the whites, so driver will be essential. Putter is in too. Three of the par 3s are 5 irons for me, so the 5 iron is in.

I'm stuck on which wedge to take. Choices are 48, 51 and 58 degree. I can't decide whether to take a hybrid in case I'm in the rough and for the par 5s or a 7 iron or 8 iron.

Anyone got any thoughts or previous experiences to share?

Definitely not taking my 3 wood. I hit my driver so much better and I rarely hit my 3 wood except on the par 5s and then I don't often get up in two. So it's not really worth taking it.

Almost the same as above but I'd go
Driver
Rescue
7 iron
Pw
Putter

That gives you a 3 club gap between your rescue and 7 and 7 to PW
Given the choice, I would definately take 3 wood instead of the driver, but if you cant hit it, there's no point.

We had one of these recently and it was posted as a fun comp
3 club challenge INCLUDING putter.
You're spoilt for choice HRC :)

5 plus putter is easy may aswell let you use the whole bag

3 wood, 4 iron, 6iron, 8iron, wedge, putter.

IMO should be 3 includeing putter to make it interesting

Realistically, I have to take my 5 iron as that's the club for three (and possibly four) of the par 3s. I don't see that I cannot take it. Having to manufacture a shot on 3 holes where you can rack up a big number, doesn't seem sensible.

So, definitely in are:

Driver
5 iron
Putter

The question is do I go hybrid and wedge, 7 iron and wedge or maybe 9 iron and 51/58 degree wedge?

1. Your rescue is the same as your 4 iron, is that right?
2. where is the trouble on the par 3s?
Short by any chance?
Hit your rescue at those holes but down the grip an inch or two.
Eitherwise, the gap between your driver and 5 iron will be huge.
I still think 3W rescue would be better, then 7 iron and PW

1: My rescue is a touch more than my 4 iron.
2: 4th Hole, trouble is left, right and long with OOB on the right. 6th, trouble very short and long. 8th, trouble left, OOB for a hook and trouble long.

I really have to take my driver. It's non-negotiable! :) I have little confidence with my 3 wood at the moment - it's getting better - but am driving extremely well and I'm full of confidence with it.

I might have a practice round this week and try the par 3s with my rescue and see how they go.

I am with Freddie on this one. 5 clubs is way too easy, and so is pointless. I often only carry 7 in a pencil bag anyway.

3 clubs including putter is more fun for this sort of format.

However, if my only game of the weekend is a silly comp like this, I'm not keen anyway.

We do a foursomes five club bogey once a year. It takes up the whole of Saturday morning, as they close the tee til 12, for about 40 players (yes, unbelievably they can get 40 members out of 600 to play this nonsense, and feel the need to close the first for 5 hours). The only way to make this comp worse would be to make it mixed.
