Played in my Christmas sweep today where we had a 5 club challenge.

Taking the conditions into account I chose my 3w, 5 iron, 8 iron, 56 degree & putter.

I was generally pleased with my selection but felt it could have been different at times, but then I could have thought that whatever I had selected.

I think in hindsight the only minor change would have been the 56 to a 52 otherwise it went well.

Frozen greens were the biggest challenge but I came 2nd, no prize though :(

We have a 3 club challenge coming up soon over the holiday period so that was a slight good dress rehearsal.

What would you select with a 5 club challenge?

In these sorts of Comps, although I haven't played one for years, I always made sure I had clubs I could hit the par 3's with.
At my place a 9 iron and a 7 would hit all bar 1, a 4 iron needed for the other.
Fortunately distance isn't too much of an issue for me so with 5 clubs to play with I'd probably go :-

4 iron - 200yds
7 Iron - 160yds
9 Iron - 130yrds
58 wedge - around the green
Putter

With that set-up I can reach a par 5 in 3 shots, only really long par 4's are out of reach but they're almost par 5's to us anyway...

I think I would take hybrid instead of 3 wood and 52 wedge but stick with 5 iron 8 iron and putter.

Well played today, is putter compulsory in your 3 club?

Only take out 5 clubs on our winter course anyway.

We only have a 3 club including the putter at my home course and last year i took; Driver, 9 iron and putter. didn't do that badly either.

my finest shot of the day was a thinned 9 iron that went 217 yards on the frozen ground, I'd just about got the feeling in my fingers back by the following week;(

I did think along those lines also but with the frozen greens my 8 iron to our 7th which was 129 yards today hit the green perfectly and bounced what looked like 50 feet back into the air and flew forwards into the tree's and thick rough. Cost me my only blob

Had a four club challenge two weeks ago in the pairs winter league. Took a Driver, 3 hybrid, 7 iron and putter. Im very consistent off the tee with the driver, used the hybrid for long second shots, long par 3's as well as 50 yard shots. The 7 iron was used for everything else. Came second off 3/4 handicap on frozen greens so didnt do too badly. If I had to put another club in the bag it would probaly be my 52 degree but generally done well enough by opening up the face of the 7 iron.

Ours was 3+ putter a few weeks ago.

I came 3rd with 44pts (missed 4' putts on the last 3 holes) and took driver, 7i, GW. (Not as good as it sounds as it was played from the red tees).
If I could take an extra club I'd swap the 7 for a 5 and 8.

Still mustve shot under par despite missing some short ones? Sounds good golf to me
