Hey all,
I have a 15 degree 3 wood and im hitting it (for the moment) really well, what i was wondering was, if i had a 13 degree 3 Wood, would it give me much extra distanc (is any) Cheers Guys
 
Probably not much more distance but it may be harder to hit consitantly.

Had one many years back and it was a real pig to play off the fairway at times.
 
Most probably it would give you a lower more piercing flight that if you caught correctly given the right conditions may go a bit further.

If you are hitting it well, why you even considering changing?

Hi Andy, was just wondering. My course has ultra tight fairways which are nearly all tree lined and of late i have been bold enough to leave my driver in my locker and just hit my 3 wood although im probably 40 - 50 yards shorter off the tee.I was just thinking if i could gain an extra 20 to 30 yards it would help me massivley but i just thought i would ask you lot for a bit of advice first. :)

I used to play with a 12 degree 3 wood and loved the low piercing flight which was gr8 into the wind but down wind I struggled to get any height. This limited my options if I needed a longish carry.

Ditched the 12 degree and now have a 15 degree.

PS 12 degree available if you fancy it?

what sort is it? what shaft etc?
 
I had a mate who had a Callaway "strong" 3 wood back in the 1990s. I don't remember the loft, but he used it most of the time. Shorter shaft (than driver) and lower loft (compared to reg 3 wood) seemed to make it a safe bet off the tee, compared to his 9 degree driver.
Could be an interesting buy/experiment.

Thats what i was thinking. if one pops up cheap enough on EBay i may buy it and see what happens, im watching a Ping g10 with a Graphalloy red stiff in it which sounds pretty smart. i used to have a G10 Driver with a Graphalloy shaft in that was nice to hit with a low ball flight before i got my new driver
 
The modern games leans towards higher lofts in woods with lower spin balls. In that regard stick with the 15. Accuracy is better than a few yards gained. I have played 13 deg 3 woods and whilst they're good off the tee they're harder to hit off the deck.
 
Interesting idea. I've just put my 3 wood back in the bag (had to lose a wedge in return) as we are still getting loads of run and I'm running out of fairway on a number of holes. I think if you can find a reasonably priced strong version on the net and the shaft option is good for you it would be a good move.
 
Its something I've toyed with for a while now, using a strong 3 - 12/13 degree from the tee instead of the driver and after my tribulations with the big dog I'm not convinced yet that it's not the right move.

However, the R9 is going ok at the moment so I'll stick for a while unless I see a cheap example then I might take the plunge and experiment.
 
Silly suggestion, but why not just get a more lofted driver. You would then have the best of both worlds, a more accurate driver and a three wood you like and are hitting well.
 
I've put my 3 wood back in. It's the only club NOT a W/S with proforce V2. I left it out last few games, but I need it tomorrow. I'm playing a big event on an Open Q course and want to avoid some of the bunkers at 230-260 off the tee.
Trouble is.....last time I used it, I didn't hit it well at all.....
 
Yes....but you can't really hit a 460cc driver off the deck, unless you are some golf god.

I'd like a big headed 3 wood and would sacrifice not using it off the fairway. My current R5 is 180cc and I'm yet to find a bigger one.

I played one game (at least) this year with a 10 and a 13 degree driver....both went very well.....but I got a few odd looks. "2 drivers today Dave"?

Hi there, like i said the fairways at my club are nearly all tree lined and ultra tight to boot. I love my driver, its the sexiest driver ive ever seen and i smash it for miles. i use it whenever im playing somewhere where there is a lovely wide fairway and a little room for error. up until about a month ago i used it all the time at my place but i got a pencil bag (knees going, struggling a bit with a big stand bag) and had to leave a few clubs out. i opted to leave the driver out as i can usually hit my 3 wood around 250-260 ish depending on wind and i was totally gobsmacked by just how straight i could hit it.. even if it leaked a little right or pulled a little left i am just short enough to get over any trees or other trouble whereas with my driver if i went left or right i was right up in the middle of it all. i had a lesson with the pro last week and was chatting to him about it and he said "at last ur starting to think like a golfer" :)
 
If you have ultra tight fairways (like my place) then moving down to a 13 degree might prove costly, the added loft normally means added accuracy. I know I would rather be a few yards shorter and on the short stuff, than a few yards longer into the long stuff.

Hi Tony, yeah, im slowly learning that to be on the shortstuff but with a longer shot into the green is massivley better than longish but then a chip out sideways.
My 3 wood is a club which i (up until latley) very rarley used. ive only been at my new club this year but it needs a totally different approach than what ive been used to. I was just toying with the idea that maybe with less loft and maybe a shaft with a high kick point might squeeze out another 20 - 30 yards and leave me needing lik a 6 or 7 iron in as opposed to a 4 or 5. I suppose its something i would have to check out for myself to be 100% sure :D
 
Get ya self down to ya local range and try some out, its the only way you'll ever know.

If you hit 6, 7 out of 10 pretty well I would say go for it.
