Morning all,

I've been looking at this forum for a few months so I thought I'd say hello and ask for some advice on getting a new 3-wood.

I'm struggling with the driver at the moment where the miss is to the left and it's costing me a lot of shots a round. I've had medals recently where I've played three off the tee four times in the round, so I'd like to get a 3 wood which I can use when the driver is misbehaving.

I've had a quick look at the TM R9 and the Ping G15, but I haven't been able to hit any of them yet. I was wondering if any of you guys have hit these and what are your thoughts. Is this flight control technology any good on the TM clubs?

I'll go for a proper fitting once I can swing a club again, but these two are at the top of the list at the moment, are there any others out there that I should consider?

Cheers,
steviep

I had the same problem and have just bought the Ping G15, superb club and looks really good behind the ball. Hitting it really well and now looking at the driver to match to replace my TM superquad.

I carry the TM Burner in 3 and 5 wood, along with my 52 deg they are my favourite clubs in the bag. Excellent off the tee or the deck, can't reccommend them highly enough. They sit really well behind the ball and fill you with confidence.

Doesn't necessarily mean they will suit everyone though, go somewhere that you can hit a selection of different clubs from different manufacturers is the best bet.

I find that the same fault that rears its ugly head occasionally with the driver manifests itself in the 3 wood off the tee; it's a swing fault when it happens, not a club fault. So only elect to hit the 3 wood for course management reasons. Generally I find the driver the most consistant club in the bag, with that 460cc head, how can you miss? :D ;)

Have a look at the Cleveland Launcher DST it has quite a big head so is ideal for off the tee but is easy to hit from the fairway as well. You can get 13 strong, 15 and 18 highloft versions. Well worth a look if you ask me.

Dont know what your budget is Steve,
But if you've been reading most posts lately you might have read that iv ditched my driver about 5 months ago....And im more consistent with the 3 wood......
If your a little open minded about which choice of 3 Wood you want i use a Wilson Staff Fybrid 3 wood with a proforce V2 stiff shaft.....You should be able to pick them up for buttons on the net and its good from any lie.....Its fairly long off the tee too....

The maximum budget is about £150. I've always looked at Titleist, TM or Callaway in the past, but I'm open to try anything that helps me around the course in the lowest score. When I can go and swing a club again I'll give the Wilson a go. Thanks for the tip.

I have a G15 5 wood and it is great so can only imagine the 3 wood is the same. However the best 3 wood I have hit is is the new Callaway FT-IZ but they are a bit pricy which is what stopped me buying. I use a Sonartec 3 wood at the minute which is very good distance wise but a bit tricky to hit.

Hi StevieP.
Why spend £150 on a new club, when you could spend £15/£20 on a lesson instead?
Find out why you're hitting the ball left and practice. It's much more satisfying than just buying new clubs to try and fix a problem.

Hi Bob,
I'm just about to book some lessons to try and get to the bottom of the problem with the driver, but I had keyhole surgery on my left knee just over 2 weeks ago and can't hit a ball at the moment.
My current 3 wood is about 6 years old and I'm struggling with it. With the changes in technology over the last few years, there may be one out there that will help when the swing isn't working well.

Shop around once you are fit again and look online for upcoming demo days. Try to hit them at ranges or at clubs rather than in a shop bay or in a net so you can see the flight and not rely on a computer readout. Go to your pro and see what he has in stock or can recommned. I don't know what you are using at the moment but I doubt it is that outdated technologically

I'm using a TM 200 steel with a rifle steel shaft at the moment. With the multitude of shafts and fitting options available there may be something out there that can help get a few extra yards and a bit of added forgiveness. When I do go looking I think I'll take my current club and compare that to what's on the market.

Hmm, not a bad club.

I have a 1993(?) Big Bertha 5 wood. I don't use it, but it's just as good as my 2009 Fybrid. I reckon steel shafts are utterly reliable.

I'm not convinced that the answer to all driver woes is to buy a 3-wood, they don't come with a guarantee.

that said I recently bought a 3-wood. I tried the Titleist 909F2, a Wilson and the Mizuno MX700. Titleist was best off the deck, not so good off the tee (too unforgiving), Wilson was hopeless and the Mizzie best all-round, so I bought the Mizzie - £99.
