3 Putts...

As a 17 hcapper and at my track I feel ive done very well if I 3 putt 1/2 times...early season I would have accepted 3/4 3 putts.....my putting has improved in time......different story at away tracks where 3/4/5 would not be uncommon...I have managed 4 rounds at mine without 3 putting,a great feeling.

Usually one every three or four rounds. Sometimes you just know that an approach putt is difficult and if you accept that you may 3 putt it makes it less painfull. We don't hit every green or fairway so why should we expect to take 2 putts or less on every green.

Blimey, once again the GM Forum is better at golf than the pros !

Expect 1 per round; 2 per round is common; 3 per round is not uncommon. 4 or 5 and you are having a bad round on the greens or they are much faster / slopier than you normally play

Of course, these figure are when you putt out - if you are playing gimmes, your figures aren't representative.

No gimmies in my school....being a pro.

Don't 3 putt too often to be honest..... But that doesn't tell the full story, I don't hit enough GIR therefore I don't tend to have many long putts..... Which I also am not very good at... Am sure if I hit more greens I may 3 putt. More, one every 25 - 30 holes would be acceptable for my level!?

+1 to this

There is a formula rule that applies for amateurs:

< 3 per round = 0 remembered
> 3 per round = NR anyway

It follows then that 3 per round is all that amateurs can remember (its then adjusted for forum speak) :)

Surprisingly often.

In a comp earlier this year racked up 100 and all down to 3 putts.

Mind you the greens were 12 on the stimp and 36MPH wind.

175 competitors 89 NRs came 50th odd reduction only and it was a 8 handicap and below cut off.

Finished with the same ball though

Don't keep track but I would say a lot! I'm absolutely gash at putting......

Actually, my home course has small greens and I know them so not so often there but playd loads of different courses this year and my shocking putting has been found out big time!

Lots of practice for me......

You do well to maintain you HC with at least 2 per round...... You must put it close on others and loads of 1 putts !!

I normally have around 34-35 putts per round. If I'm hitting the ball well, I play on or around my HC, if I'm not I'm in trouble.

On the odd day I make 31 or 32 putts, i put a good score together. The greens for me is where I really need to improve.

I'm sure most folk 3 putt more than they think

So, the only ones that don't hate a 3 putt are those habitual 4-putters...they're a waste of a shot. Nobody likes them.

But we all 3 putt from time to time..
But what level, number, percentage do you feel is realistically acceptable.?
Obviously the lower the handicap the less the percentage will be and you can't say that none are acceptable as you're going to do it sooner or later.
I'm on about 5% this year, so one 3 putt every 20 holes.
I'd be happier to get that to one in 30/35 holes...
What about you..?

I don't really care how often it happens... should I?

I have some rounds when I don't 3-putt and the score is worse than on a round when I've done it twice.

If I was devoted to knowing the pace of the greens (that means practicing) then I know for sure that I'd 3-putt a lot less.

I can live with 3 putting once per round. Twice gets on my nerves.

If I could get down to one a round I'd be happy...

Nick Watney... 9 times in 4 rounds

Is it your putting that is at fault though?

Often for me it is down to my approach play. Not necessarily from not being close enough, but from just leaving it in a place where a two putt is a miracle. For instance, the wrong side of a mound, on the wrong tier, way past the pin but all down hill.

I'm not a bad putter, but some three putts are inevitable. Even the pros do it, and most of them are pretty good putters.

I dont think number of 3 putts tells the full story. I think putts per GIR is a more useful stat. As alluded to earlier, if you're not hitting greens you're less likely to 3 putt.

If I understand you right this is a good point.
I don't hit the green too often from 100+ yards out, I usually end up short or just off. This leaves an easyish chip to the flag which will be a lot closer than your average wedge/iron into the green.
