3 putts

Another thing to take into consideration is that golf balls are not 100% perfect, even the better makes. I have not looked into this in depth but bought a machine from america that you sit a golf ball in and it spins it up to a few thousand rpm, while this is happening you can see the ball finding its natural balanced position and then when it stops adjusting and spins in a consistant way you stick a permanent marker pen in a slot and it marks a line round the exact balanced centre. You then use this line to position ball on drives and putts, I was sceptical but if you stop it and then put the ball back in a diiferent position,it returned to the same position with the line overwriting the previous. I definately saw a more straighter putt with less tendency to go off line. How many times have you had the same line putt as a partner only to find it reacts differently, makes you wonder!

But then i also have 1 putts or 2nd putts that go in that shouldnt have - ie theyve hit a spike mark and turned in to the hole instead of away from it

Probably not as many but a good number

i very rarely 3 putt ,even now that im not playing much or on the same greens

had 3 or 4 friday when i played (of which id say 1 was down to me as the greens had been spiked (still good condition tho)

but im the same as murph,as long i strike the putt good & its on the line i chose im happy

fortunately due to many many hours of practice in my younger days on the putting green ,i know when i put a bad stroke on it or when its down to a misread or just down a "bobble"

also when something "bizarre" happens i can recognize it & i dont let it get to me,But i bet there are plenty of ppl out there where putting isnt a strong part of their game & when it happens to them it affects their confidence in their putting &reading of greens

I've said this loads of times. There are a lot of factors completely out of your control that can cause a putt not to drop. It could be anything from a spike mark or just a bad putt. Sometimes it's your fault, sometimes it isn't, no point beating yourself up over it.

The majority of the time a 3 putt is down to me.

I once got to a hole which had a slight crown, had a wee practice on it after finishing the hole. No matter how much I tried a dead weight putt wouldn't go down. It either broke left or right and once rolled back towards me a bit! This almost guaranteed a 2 putt outside 3 feet. It needed a bit extra to put in down. Worst thing is a miss with the extra weight resulted in an overshoot leaving a return with the exact same problem. Stableford scores on the hole where terrible that day.

Bob, can you say with confidence that you hit all 3 putts exactly the same speed.

As we know, you hit a ball quicker, it breaks less. Hit it slower, it breaks more. I'd imagine even over that distance, the slightest adjustment in speed will affect the line.

I get your point though. If we pick the line, and pace, we do rely on the greens being tip yop with no lumps, bumps or scuffs.

I generally know when a 3 putt is my fault and when it's the green.

The one thing I do kick my self about, is the downhill 4-5 footer with a cup or more of break. Dribble it, or bury it??? Dribbled tend to lose then line I chose, buried tend to lip and and go a mile past!

I'd love to blame something else for my three putts but I'm pretty sure it was me - all SEVEN of them on Saturday :-(
That sounds pretty much how my round went on Saturday and the previous Saturday. I just can't seem to get the first put to the hole.
I started bogey (3 putt), birdie, bogey (3 putt) on Saturday and the 3 putts continued throughout the round.

Do you vary the length of the backswing on the longer putts?

Ouch. seven 3 putts is alot.
What's the problem....direction or distance?

I was struggling to get the long putts within five feet and then managed to pull most of the "2nd" putts from five feet and in so I suppose you could say a bit of both. Only sank two putts all day that wouldn't have been classed as tap-ins.

Putting has been my problem all year, think I've only had about two competition rounds where I haven't felt like it has cost me at least three shots.
