I know this has already been covered before, but I think this may be slightly different.

Whilst in Athens this week I texted a golfing mate of mine to find out what was going on this weekend at the club and to get a chance to try out the new 'big stick'.

Anyway, there is a three club comp on Sunday, so I'm sticking my name down. Normally, anyone I've known who plays these gets three clubs, and then their putter.

Ours is apparently only 3 clubs, including your putter.

I'm stuffed if I know which clubs to take. I was thinking Driver, 8 iron and putter. Only problem here is if I land in a bunker, the chances of me getting out with an 8 are very slim, but I can't go Driver, PW and putter, as that seems ridiculous.

Is there anyway you can get more distance out of a shorter iron than you would playing it normally? Would putting it back in your stance tend to get you more distance, or alternatively, what are my chances of getting out of links bunkers with an 8 iron?

Not really the round I was looking for on my first game back for 4 weeks!!! :(

Any advice?

If I was playing in one of these I certainly wouldnt be taking a driver, I would maybe take 4 or 5 iron and 9 iron or pw, or even 3 iron, 7 ron and pitching wedge and use the 3 iron to putt with

I'm with Tincup here. 3/4 iron, 7 iron & Pitching wedge or if you must have a putter- 5 iron, pitching wedge & putter. How may holes can't you reach with 3 X 5 iron?

Agree, forget the driver

maybe a hybred wood in place of the 3/4 iron, You could putt with this...Give it a try you may be surprised

next club would be a 7 iron

Followed by a pw or 52 degree ish loft

Good Luck

5 iron, 9 iron and a putter. There won't be many holes that 3 x 5I you will be short on and it'll be the same for everyone. There is no right answer and I'm sure others playing will carry a wood a mid iron and the putter thus giving themselves short game problems.

I should check the rules of the comp first. There's one at our place next week, and it states that it will be played of the ladies tees!

Totally agree with Ethan on this one. Hybrid (17% for distance off tee, and straighter face for putting), 7 iron and wedge.
Weird comp - usually 4, 5 or 7 club comps, but 3 is bizarre.

OP says 3 clubs INCLUDING the putter which is why I think a wood/hybrid and an other clubs is too much of a gap. From what I remember a five iron off the tee at Bude (certainly off the yellows) will carry most trouble

Homer - I've not played Bude, and so I am prepared to bow to your superior knowledge. My thinking was that with a 17% utility he could then reach some of the short par 4's with a 7 iron. If Bude's par 4's are reachable with 5 iron, 5 iron, then so be it.

I'm only going on memory but only the third, ninth, eleventh, sixteenth and seventeenth would have any real issues with a five iron off the tee. The ones on the back nine in particular would just mean the green would be out of reach in two

As I say I'm going from memory and stand to be corrected especially if the course is playing longer with all the recent rain etc.

Homer, that's a pretty good memory you got there. Basically 3 is ok with a 5 off the tee. Its a dog leg par 4, but if you go with five you'd probably have to hit 5 again to the green, and it aint an easy green to hold. 9 is a par 5, but 2 decent hits with a 5 would probably only leave you about 100 into the green. 11 again is a fiven but if the wind is coming in off the coast its right in your face, so normally plays long, so I may make that with three good 5 irons. 16 is the tricky one, especially of off the whites, as the carry is tricky with a driver. Probably why its SI1 and 17 is ok off the tee, but there's no way of going for that in two (par 4 SI3)

Probably the only one that would cause real problems off the tee is 16. But then again that would probably be the case with anything other than driver.

I would rather compromise on the irons than lose my putter so agree with Homer on 5,9 and putter. If I had to putt with a hybrid or 5 iron I would be lucky to avoid 45+ putts.

I think one of them has to be the putter so I don't think I have the option, otherwise I'd have considered putting by blading it with my 54!!! :).

How does the possibilty of having to get out of links bunkers come into the equation? Would you guys be happy trying to open the face of your 9 or PW to play the shot? My i5's don't have too think a sole so I might be ok.

5i, 9i and putter. You get plenty of shots so, in the main play the par 4's as par 5's and you should clean up.

let us know how you get on.

Our 3 club comp is just 3 clubs I won last year with a net 76 playing off 20h/c I used 3 wood 8 iron and putter,i was only in 2 bunkers so that was lucky.I have tried taking a driver before and putting with that but wouldnt do that again.Whatever clubs you choose I would defenatly advise taking a putter after all its the club you use the most .Good luck I would also add it makes me wonder why i carry a full set around when for my h/c and above a half set would do.

For me it would be a Driver, PW and a Putter

the way i see it is i hit my driver probably 275+ and my PW 125-140 so if i play a 425 yd par 4 i can hit my driver get reasonably close if not on the green with my second then i have a PW so the short game should not be too much of an problem!

Hi Screwback
I can see the logic in your chioce of clubs off your h/c ive no doubts you would get on well with them.I suppose it all depends on what standard of player you are.I play in our 3 club every year After trying differant combos 3wood 8 iron and putter works best for me.

Cant argue with your choices mate as they clearly work as you have won one of these comps!!
