3/4 irons.......

I've just put my 3 & 4 irons back in the bag instead of hybrids. I've always had a soft spot for them but succumbed to the hybrid route a few years ago. Since I started to have lessons earlier this year my ball striking has been getting better so I stuck them back in and am hitting them better than ever. I understand what the hybrid brings to the party but you just can't beat the feeling of a well hit 3 iron in my opinion.
 
I've taken my 3iron out recently just because I can hit all the same shots, plus many more, with my 3h so it gave me room in the bag for another wedge. What is the point in having 2 clubs in the bag that serve the same purpose??

Sounds like a nice shot from the OP, but, with the same 3iron, can they hit a high cut? A high draw? Move the ball further than 100yds out of deep rough? Green side chips over rough?

Two response to this OP: why remove the versatility my 3h brings, and, why try to do something that could reduce the enjoyment for some people.

I can't hit those shots at will with any of my clubs :D I'm afraid I'm fairly one dimensional in the shot making sense at the moment. I can hit a fade but whether I could control the trajectory is another matter altogether!!!
 
The chances are, if you'd used a hybrid you could have stopped the ball on the green quicker, so it wouldn't have run through, and you might have got a birdie instead of just another boring par.

A high draw? again.....when I set up for it......
Move the ball further than 100yds out of deep rough? Same with a 5 Wood.

Green side chips over rough? The day I have to use a 3H or 5W for that is the day I'll stop playing.....

I took my 3 iron out of my bag and replaced it with a hybrid only because it's easier to hit out of the rough.

There's a lot of rough at my course and quite penal rough too. There are shots where you might only be able to get an 8 iron or less on it and just advance it back to the fairway. But with a hybrid, you can get much more distance.

As I've been hitting the ball much better, I'm tempted to put it back into the bag at the expense of a wedge at the moment.
 
I will admit is is very impressive when you watch someone drill a 3 iron 180 yds with a penetrating ball flight into the wind but sadly I am not one who can master this shot as I have consisently a very high ball flight. But surely the main aim of this game we love is to get the ball into the hole in as few shots as possible regardless of what we use. I think that would be the same view as YE Yang!!!

How often would you end up with a good result with this particular scenario? For me, it'd maybe come off one time out of ten. With a hybrid, it'd maybe come off one time out of two.

That's why I use a hybrid ;)
 
Good drive left me with 210yds to the green on Stroke index 1 at a friends course, Par 4/464yds,.........so 3 iron in hand, I managed to sweep it away and watch it fly like a bullet to the green, running slightly too far and coming to rest on the left rear apron. Delicate chip and a 8" putt and I walked off with a very satisfying Par, which proved all too rare on the rest of the round.

I'm guessing that's the 9th at Hull. Take a bit more credit as well. That's 210 yards uphill! Cracking shot.
 
Unless the rules have changed without me knowing recently, golf is still a game of lowest score wins isn't it??

A beautifully drilled 3 iron from 210yds to 10feet counts as the same amount of shots as a skulled 3h that bobbles up to 10feet.

If it's the "feel good" factor from hitting the more difficult clubs that we want then we could stand on the range all day flushing them from perfect level stances and lies with the bay heater on and the coffee machine 5 paces away and be so happy that those around us are marvelling at our prowess but on the course we can't break 80.

I assembled my bag of clubs to help me shoot the lowest score possible not to look good.

Can I hit a 1/ 2/ 3 iron? Yes
Can I hit them CONSISTENTLY as well as my hybrid? No

Hell, I can hit my putter nigh on 200yds but it's an awful lot easier to hit a 4 iron. :D

This hasn't been said for such a long time on here.

Word. :D

(Or am I getting old and behind the times :D)
 
Lots of us older players have memories of playing 1 and 2 irons, some with blades like butter knives, but I now noi longer even carry a 3 iron. the reason is that a good hybrid, note the qualifier 'good', is a very versatile and powerful club that renders the 2 or 3 iron unnecessary.

Off a nice fluffy flat lie in the fairway, a 3 iron is still OK, but if the lie is in any way dodgy, or slightly downhill, or a shot that needs a draw, or it is still early in the round etc etc the hybrid is going to win every time.
 
Hybrids are wrong, wrong, wrong!!!
They are cheats clubs.
If you cant hit a long iron, why bother playing golf at all.
They should all be banned.
