The Irish love to spin a story... and after 200 years, historians are hoping to locate the remains of the dead sailors of the HMS Saldhana under the 18th of Ireland's Portsalon Golf Club. No one knows quite what will happen if the remains are found, but the stories of ghosts will no doubt get another boost... and encourage late evening golfers to play the 18th in record time.

If you want to read more, the story's on my blog:

And if you want to play the best 2nd hole on the island, and one of the best holes in the 32 counties, drop in to Portsalon GC on your next visit.

"In 2007 and 2008, I travelled around Ireland in a camper van, playing and reviewing every 18 hole golf course - all 349 of them."

Lucky you! I'm not jealous........ grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr :D

I'd like to bury a few people under the 18th at my course! :D

I've been there a couple of times and it was in great shape, but I imagine it could get fairly wet, being by the river and all. Still, I'd have imagined that the drainage would have been good enough, seeing as it's such a new course. Here are some pics of Bunclody: http://www.flickr.com/photos/kevinmarkham/sets/72157622553007353/

And here's the lift:
